Does anyone know what antibiotic, if any, have minimal impact on GI system? Elianna was an augmentin and while taking it for an ear inf she had three episodes…I took her off early and hasnt had one for 5 days but now I am concerned her ear inf is back! During the antiobiotic she had loose stools, little appetite, and some spitting up in addition to her three “episodes”. Her barium study is tomorrow but am thinking of having her ears looked at today! Any info please share!

Augmentine is prob too strong on her system. It has both amoxicilin (spelling?) and something called clavulanic acid (i am translating from spanish, so has to be something similar). The clavulanic acid is what can produce stomach cramps and diarrhea (BTW – this is also a normal reaction in some adults). So you should just ask for amoxicilin on its own… with MAtthew, there are times where we can give Augmentine, and sometimes we need to switch half way through.
FYI – the clavulanic acid is supposed to just increase the potency of the antibiotic (and some doctors don’t even believe in it much).
Hope this helps

This happens because although antibiotics are used against specific
bacteria like in the ear, they also can kill the good bacteria in the
GI system. This imbalance causes the diarrhea. It can also cause yeast infections
as the antibiotic can kill the good bacteria that keep the yeast in
check. That’s why some people use yogurt with active cultures or a Probiotics type of capsule that has active cultures in them.
Also, the bacteria that cause the diarrhea, love lactose which is in
dairy products. So when my sons would get diarrhea they would have to
go off milk (or use soy formula) and drink pediolyte or back in my day
the Dr’s had us use jello water.I use to put a few teaspoons to taste with cold water and they
drank it from a bottle. The jello didn’t all disolve like it does in
hot water and it was common to see some of the jello granules on the
inside of the bottle.Does anyone have a Pedi who suggests jello water?

My doc told me to make sure that you take the probiotic or yogart roughly 2 hours after taking the antibiotic. You dont want to take them too close together.
And as for the antibiotic that is easy on the digestive tract….. I’m not sure of one that is gentle, but I can tell you which one is really nasty on the tummy. Its Omnicef. It is primarily used for ear infections.
