InactiveI dont consider myself useless in the kitchen but I need some advice as to how to prepare chicken for Tyler. I fried up some chicken and then cut it up in the food processor/blender and it went like soft breadcrumbs and then I mixed it up with some pumpkin and fed it to him. I think that the texture was too rough because he kept gagging and vomiting every time I put it in his mouth. How do you prepare chicken so that it is smooth and soft? When I used to buy jars of baby food for my daughter that had chicken in them, you couldnt even see the chicken it was so smooth. With Tyler I have to make everything myself and Im not sure about how to prepare meat.
Any ideas?

InactiveIs Tyler OK with chicken? Have you found a food he’s able to eat?

KeymasterI boiled chicken, like in a soup, and then once it was soft I put it in the babyfood grinder http://www.happybabyproducts.com/kidcofoodmill.html and then added a LOT of broth to it…

InactiveThanks Laura, I will give that a try.
Karen – it has been such a slow process, but so far he has been able to tolerate potato and pumpkin. He has had reactions with apple, pear, rice cereal, and sweet potato. We are trying chicken at the moment but are having problems getting the consistency right.
His favourite thing at the moment is french fries made in the oven, he likes things he can eat himself.
It is such a long process cause it takes about 3 days before he has a reaction and then it takes about another 3 days for him to get over it, so he really only tries one food a week.

InactiveWell good news that he can at least tolerate those foods and hopefully the list will grow! Have you tried zucchini?

InactiveLike Laura said, we boil it and then put it in the grinder. We boil it with the veggies and then grind it all together. It should look like the one in the jars hopefully! I think that frying it probably makes it too hard and chunky…. good luck! What about carrots? Matthew eats chicken and veal with carrots and potatoes (when he eats :-))

Inactivethanks everyone, will go and get some more chicken to boil up.
I have cooked up some brocolli and zuchinni and frozen them, so that is what we will be trying after the chicken. Lamb is on the permitted list so we will try that soon too.
He has been able to tolerate the pumpkin ok, but has had a bit of a rash and excema from it, so we might have to just have small amounts of that for a while.

InactiveJust an update. I boiled up the chicken with some potato and mixed it up with the blender and he really liked it, no gagging. He seems to only like solids at dinnertime though, not breakfast or lunch, thats a bit strange. He has tolerated the chicken for a week which is so great. He has had a cold for a week as well, but he has handled it really well. Next meat is lamb so I am going to cook that up in the same way, hopefully he likes it.

InactiveGood to know Amber – will keep that in mind for down the road.
I see that you and some others have had luck with potato – but not
sweet potato. By that do you mean a regular Idaho or Russet potato? If
so, do you just peel and boil and then puree?February 16, 2006 at 5:01 pm #1710Anonymous
InactiveYes just a regular yellow potato, Im sure we have different sorts here compared with the US so Im not sure what type it was. I just peeled it, and boiled it up. Once they are 6 months you dont have to puree, you can just fork mash.
We gave Tyler some zucchini yesterday and it was a nightmare. Usually if he has a reaction to something it is after 2 or 3 days, but this time it was within about half an hour. He started screaming uncontrollably and continued to for about 2 hours, it was terrible. Needless to say Im in no hurry to try zucchini again. I have made an appointment to see the dietician next Thursday to see where we go from here.

InactiveThanks for the input, Amber. Sorry to hear about the zucchini though – that’s a strong reaction! Is he feeling better today?
Have you tried avocado yet?

InactiveWell he was feeling better so I thought I would give rice another try, just plain ground rice, not rice cereal. Two hours of screaming later…..
. I think we will give rice a try after he’s 12 months.I havent tried avocado yet. Will ask the dietician on Thursday whether we can try. He is loving pumpkin, potato and chicken at the moment so at least he is having something. Im not even bothering to try more than 1 or 2 days of something if he has a reaction, I just cant handle all the crying. He has really improved so much in the last couple of weeks, it is now easy to tell when he is having a reaction to a food. When we first started on solids he was miserable all the time so it was hard to tell what was the food and what was reflux.
Anyway, broccoli and lamb are the next on my list, so fingers crossed.

InactiveFingers crossed for you – good luck!

InactiveQuestion – you guys that boiled chicken – did you boil in water or
broth? We want to try chicken starting tomorrow – not sure yet if going
to try jarred or make but need to know in case make for her. Thanks!May 5, 2006 at 6:46 pm #7593Anonymous
InactiveHi Karen
I just boiled up some pieces in water and when it was cooked I used some of the water that it was cooked in and put it in the blender with the chicken and made it into a puree. Tyler likes chicken, now he can handle more chunky food, I just buy minced chicken and fry it.
Good luck with the chicken!
