InactiveMy daughter is 7 weeks old and just started her first dose of Zantac last night. She had the worse night ever! Not so much with the reflux but she was waking up every hour, very fussy unless eating and couldnt sleep. She has been very fussy this morning as well. I know she just started it but just wondering if this could be a negative effect from taking the meds. Has anyone else had negative symptoms with Zantac? Also, how long after taking this did you start to notice a difference? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

InactiveHi and Welcome!!
My oldest daughter was started on it when she was about your daughter’s age and she reacted exactly the same way. I know there is alcohol in it and I still wonder if that was the problem. She was switched to Pepcid and did just fine on that. The Pepcid didn’t work, however, for my second daughter and we ended up on Zegerid.
Hope you can find out what is going on – Good luck!

InactiveThanks for the information. Did you notice the negative effects right away? Do you know how long it takes for the Zantac to get in their system?

InactiveHi and welcome.
My son was started on Zantac (along with Reglan) when he was 6 wks old. We actually noticed a difference within a few days, and didn’t notice any side effects. However, it only seemed to help for a couple of months and then it stopped working for him. We started him on Prevacid then, and it did wonders! You might want to ask your doctor about Prevacid (or another PPI medicine). PPIs reduce the acid, so when they reflux, it doesn’t hurt. Your baby sounds like she’s pretty uncomfortable, so a PPI might be good for her.
Good luck finding something that works!

InactiveJust the fact that youre baby was fussy all night might be a sign that she was infact refluxing but you just didn’t know it. Zantac never worked for us but it may for you. It does not stop the production of acid it only helps with the pain when the acid comes up. it is also very weight sensitive.

Inactivezantac never did much for my son besides make him scream because of the horrid taste and smell.
personally i dont know too many people that liked zantac.
maybe you can ask about pepcid or axid which are both H2 blockers as well.
or better yet, ask about PPI’s which are much more effective. we are on zegerid and doing great! and it was all thanks to marci-kid.com
have you seen that website? its very imformative in regards to PPI treatment and dosing for infants. good luckOctober 11, 2006 at 4:21 pm #15439Anonymous
InactiveKayla definitely reacted negatively to it right away so we took her off of it right away. Just like so many things, what works great for one person may not work for another. It is so much trial and error. Hope you can find something to help her out soon!!

InactiveMy daughter tolerated Zantac well and it controlled her reflux. But, in combination with her formula- is on one of the elemental formulas- called pepti-junior in Aus- it caused very acidic and burning bowel motions! So she is now on losec- which I think is previcaid? in US>
