InactiveHi all,
I’m new here but thought I’d jump in with a question as you might be able to shed some light on this. I have b/g twins who were born at 33w6d. When they came home from the NICU (2 weeks after they were born) they were having tummy issues (arching their backs, screaming in the middle of sleeping, crying alot, fussy, etc) and also had blood in their stool. Long story short, our Pedi put them on a hypoallergenic formula for 4 weeks (tried both Allimentum and Nutramigen) and the blood stayed. So, last week we moved to Neocate. So far we dont’ notice a huge difference other than my son isn’t having 6 poops a day and is down to about one gross green smelly poop. In addition to this, they’ve also had reflux issues… mainly my daughter who drinks about 1oz from her bottle and then screams in pain. My son gulps his formula and is very congested, but his reflux doesn’t seem to bother him as much..Now to my questions….1. How long does it typically take the Neocate to resolve tummy issues (babies are still waking up screaming, etc). I read that it can take up to 2 weeks.. I guess I thought it would happen sooner (they’ve been on it for 6 days so far exclusively).2. My son is spitting up A LOT on Neocate.. will this resolve itself? We were putting rice cereal in his formula when on Nutramigen and at the start of Neocate, but our pedi recommended we stop (he was very constipated earlier this week).3. My GI doctor put my daughter on Zegerid (we tried Prevacid but because of the 30 min wait it wasn’t possible as my daughter would scream at the top of her lungs (and also those little beads went everywhere except in her mouth!)). She wouldn’t prescribe the 40mg because she said the baby should not have Mylanta due to the magnesium (or something like that) and prescribed the 20mg. The first prescription was for 20mg 3x per day (15ml of water and then 5ml dose). She now bumped it up to 4x per day… does that seem like a lot for a 2 month old who only weighs 8.5lbs? I went to the MARCI calculator and they say a total of 21mg per day, so this is almost 7mg over what they’d prescribe. Also, even with the high dose it doesn’t seem to be working as she still screams when feeding..she’s been on it for 2.5 weeks (increased dose just as of last week). thoughts on why it’s not working? I mix it with water and then add a bit of formula right before feeding her (put it in a separate bottle from her meal). Help!!!Thanks in advance (and sorry so long.. hope not too confusing).BACKGROUND info:DS: Born 6/15/10 at 33w6d due to HELLP syndrome in mom. Currently on Neocate exclusively (switched from Nutramigen). Was BF for 4 weeks, but I stopped due to the allergy (did not want to do the TED). Taking Zantac for reflux (.7mg 2x/day). Weighs almost 9lbsDD: Same info as above, except she’s on Zegerid (total of 27mg given in 4 daily doses). Started on Zantac…worked for a couple weeks then stopped. Prevacid for 1 week, then Zegerid for 2.5 weeks. Weighs about 8.5lbsAugust 22, 2010 at 8:49 pm #66958hellbennt
Keymasterhi and welcome!
give the neocate 2 weeks and you don’t ‘need’ the rice cereal
some babies need both neocate and meds both.contact marci kids to find best way to give zegerid.
mylanta is fine as long as you find the one w/o aluminum
you can also use tums
that’s why I’d say to contact dr philips and ask these questions
you can also get bufferbabies instead of zegerid, made by the same people…
here is a post called Prevacid 101 (also has other info), last post on the page:

InactiveI’ll be honest (I only have a sec)… I only skimmed your post BUT I did want to say…
marci-kids says no 20mg packets for kids under 2 yrs old b/c it’s not enough buffer. They say only 40mg packets (even if you’re only giving 20mg or whatever). They have it all explained on the website… let me know if you can’t find it & I’ll link it to you.
You mix the 40mg packet w/ water & either Tums Quik Paks (this is what we use) Or Mylanta (Cherry Supreme is aluminum free). They have very specific step by step directions on the website.
