InactiveHello everyone! My LO was just diagnosed with reflux a week and half ago, and we have been on 15mg of Prevacid, split up 2x a day. It absolutely breaks my heart to see my little baby girl in such pain! How do you all handle it? She can’t sleep and screams in pain. It scares me a little, I’m so worried that the medicine won’t work and she’ll continue to be in pain for a long time.
Do any of you have any suggestions about things I can do to help her? Is there something else medication-wise I can be doing? We have given her Mylanta a couple of times, but I know that doesn’t solve the problem. Any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks!
Oh – also, does Prevacid cause gas or straining? She seems to be having so much trouble going to the bathroom, but her stools are normal?

Keymasterhi & welcome! you’ve found a great place!the key to all of this is RESEARCH and, of course, support!gas & straining very well could be signs of a protein intolerance…if you’re breastfeeding you could try cutting out all milk and soy for a good 2 weeks and see if that helps any. or just concentrate on the medication first and see how that goes…also the prevacid dose sounds good, but check here:http://www.marci-kids.com is at the FOREFRONT of research of PPI use and dosing in infants/todders. You might want to start there to see if PPI dose is ‘proper’ and to learn more about PPIs and infants and about reflux in general.then, hop back here to learn HOW to get that proper dose, if need be, and what FORM of PPI and HOW to administer…unfortunately the majority of drs & pharmacists don’t know…babies metabolisms’ are much faster than adults, so the drugs work differently with them…make sure you are giving it on an empty stomach, followed by a meal 30 minutes later. it is most effective this way.BABYWEARING SAVED US! saved.us!there’s a link from Groupie Intro
Groupie INtro is looong, but it WILL help you!please refer to it often.Groupie Intro:it’s looong, but PLEASE read/skim/scroll through it & refer back to it

InactiveWe’re having the same problem as well right now. I don’t really know what to do either when she is screaming in pain and it breaks my heart to see it and not be able to help. We just started her on Prilosec though so I’m hoping to see a change. When she is hurting and crying, I just hold her, walk her, rock her. Just to let her know I’m there and give her some comfort 🙂

InactiveThis is such amazing information! Thanks so much! It’s very helpful.

I just ordered a moby wrap, I hope it makes things a little easier! Also, the pedi just prescribed Carafate, but I’m not sure how to time it around the Prevacid? Do you know where I can find info on that?
Thanks again for your help! It’s so good to know we’re not alone!

I believe it’s supposed to be an hour before. You could do a search for it and see what results might come up. Good Luck!May 9, 2009 at 9:34 pm #62491Anonymous
InactiveThat maybe under Laura’s Groupie Intro in the Prevacid 101 section since it talks about PPI’s… but if you do a search in the upper right hand corner and type in Carafate and then search , I would do 6 months and longer as I don’t think we have had many moms using it recently. HTH.

InactiveFound it, thanks! It’s so hard to do all this timing with a newborn! I sure hope we see some improvement by adding the Carafate to the mix!

Keymasterwe used carafate for a bit when things were at their worst!
it was a godsend!it’s not intended for long-term use, it’s more like a ‘band-aid’ to help let things heal -
