InactiveHi I am new here and looking for some help 🙂 We have gone from using zantac to using prevacid to know trying Axid. This is my 4th child and and I never had such a bad time with a baby and reflux!Anyhow…….so I nurse Ryder and so far I have given up dairy and soy- which seemed to help at first. His face cleared from the rash he had but now it has come back. We were using prevacid but it gave him direhea so now we are trying Axid. I am just wondering what they side effects are- and what did you expernice for side effects?
Also now I am wondering if I need to see a pedi allergist since his rash is back. I just feel like I am missing something!
He is still spitting up- which I guess won’t ever go away till he outgrows it but the medicine is suppose to help get rid of the buring feeling right?
Sorry for so many question!

Keymasterhi & welcome!
how long did you give the prevacid? diarrhea seems to be a common side effect (as is constipation) but many find that after 2 weeks their bodies get used to it…
as for your diet- there’s tons of info here (scroll down) and lots more

Inactivehey there…well axid is an H2 blocker just like zantac-its weird that
they put you back him an H2 blcoker after the PPI. have you tried a
different PPI like prilosec or zegerid? many babies do great on zegerid
especially. it is ideal because you dont have to time with meals and
can be given with formula.also, some moms have reported stomach cramps on prevacid but like laura
said they usually subside in about 2 weeks and then the baby does great!have you read through the medications section on marci-kids.com??
that is a great resource and many moms print it out and fax it to their doctors.
and yes these meds do not stop spit up, they just block the acid so it doesnt damage the esophogus.
regarding the rash-are you positive that you have eliminated everything
that could cause that?? youd be surprised as to how much hidden dairy
and soy there is in many products.August 24, 2006 at 10:39 pm #12242Anonymous
Inactiveyup I am pretty good about avoiding all dairy and soy—- I wondering if I need to limit eggs and etc….. I think I will give it a week and see what happens.
I have been thinking of maybe going to a pedi allergist just to see if they can find out anything else. Granted I have heard that the tests are not that accurate.

Inactivewell i think you should eliminate eggs-they are dairy too.

InactiveActually, a lot of times the medicines will reduce the spitting up quite a bit. Mostly it is just to reduce the acid of course. The couple times my son didn’t get his Prevacid on time, he spit up HUGE amounts. I’m sure it’s different for each child though.
Like others have said, It would be a good idea to try the meds for at least 2 weeks; the diarhea might subside. Is he old enough to eat rice cereal? Sometimes that can counteract the diarhea. Or maybe you could try a different PPI.It sounds like he must have some kind of allergy if he keeps getting a rash. I’m sorry, I don’t know a whole lot about food allergies.
Good luck, and welcome to the site!

InactiveWhat form of prevacid was he on? Prevacid solu-tabs contain lactose and cause many of problems for some babies. But that isn’t the only ppi. There are several to chose from and I am sure you should be able to find one that will work for you.

InactiveWe were using the solutabs- There is lactose in them??? Very intresting……
BTW- eggs are not dairy 🙂

InactiveThe solutabs have lactose and aspartame. Plus they are strawberry flavored. Babies have been known to react to all three of those ingredients. Kaelyn’s doctors insisted that she couldn’t possibly be reacting to the lactose in her solutabs. When we figured out her allergies and changed her diet almost all of her symptoms cleared up, except for a few patches of eczema. Two months later we took her off of prevacid and within a day the eczema was gone. The doctors say it’s a coincidence, but I’m convinced it was the lactose in the prevacid.
