InactiveHi! I am new. Right now I am just going to copy a post I put on my other forum. I am very excited, relieved I found this forum… hoping to get some good advice.

Alright, I am at a complete loss

Nolan has been treated for silent reflux since 4 weeks old (Zantac
syrup) and we switched to soy formula. It helped some. He would still
fight bottles but not as horrible as it had been. It would take him
about an hour to finish a bottle (having to take many breaks). He has never had any issues with not gaining weight.Fast forward to about 6 months old, doctor says he should be growing out
of it, so we try taking him off the medicine. Worst 2.5 weeks ever, so
started him back on Zantac and set up an appointment with his doctor.
Go and see the doctor and we agree to try Prevacid, tried it for 5 days
(along with Zantac because Prevacid is slow to start) from day 2 to 5 he
woke up screaming around 11pm like he was in major pain, bringing his
legs up to his stomach and flipping out. This would last 2-3 hours.
Took him off Prevacid and just did Zantac and its a little bit better. Here is the other issue. He has never been a “good” sleeper. From
about 3 months to 4 months old he would at least do a 4-5 hour stretch
when he first fell asleep. But since then it has all gone down hill.
He is up every 2-3 hours and will only be settled by a bottle (and
believe me I have tried everything- patting, shhhing, pupd, rocking,
co-sleeping, elevating head of mattress and even CIO, which was more for
my need for a break from him
)
I can only guess that the milk soothes his burned throat and allows
him to go back to sleep. He use to be able to self-soothe most of the
time.
I do not even know what I am looking for in response to this post. Any
advice or even reassurance it will get better? Anyone else LO struggle
like this?We do have an appointment with a new doctor tomorrow, hoping he has the magic answer.

Keymasterhi & welcome!
the no sleeping makes me think right away that ther is a protein in his diet that he is reacting to. I would stop the soy…there is a large %, I’d say about 60% of babies who cannot tolerate milk AND/OR soy proteins- this is called MSPI (milk soy protein intolerance/allergy)- you could try alimentum or nutrimigen- this is a new ‘taste’ so you might want to try adding slowly to the soy- like a week w/ the soy formula w/ 1 ounce of the new formula, the next week 2 ounces, etc. You of course should try it out ‘straight’ and see if he takes it, then you wouldn’t have to make the switch tothe new formula slowly…
then I’d look at what you’re feeding him (cereals, babyfood, etc) and look for any hidden milk or soy proteins there and cut those out, too.when you mention the prevacid- what form was it? solutab? there are ingredients in them that some babies react to…you can try giving him probiotics (maybe after the formula switch? maybe now? if you do too much at once, you won’t know what it was that worked):probiotics, brands used:MSPI ‘Main’ page: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2697

zantac is very weight sensitive. how much does he weigh? I can help you calculate highest dose for his weight (it’s 10mg per kilo).January 5, 2011 at 5:19 pm #67496Anonymous
InactiveThanks for the reply! He just got weighed today and is 19.8 lbs.
The only thing that makes me wonder about the protein issue is he has been on soy since 6 weeks old and up until 5 months, it really seemed like that and the Zantac really helped. Could he develop an intolerance after being successful on it?
Will definitely do some major reading tonight from the links you posted once my little guy goes to bed.
Thanks again!
Liz
And the prevacid he was on was a liquid form.

Keymasterthe proteins *can* build up in his system, plus you say he tolerated it BUT you also say sleep has always been terrible…it might be that the ‘only’ symptom of not tolerating the soy is ‘seen’ as terrible sleeping?
the prevacid in liquid form most likely was not made properly. Unfortunately, the majority of liquids are NOT made correctly. I found this out the hard way and then I found this site and found that I was not the only one to notice this- it’s been ‘proven’ via research from the University of Missouri…from here:19.8 lbs = 8.84 kilosmaximum dose of zantac by weight is 10mgs per kilo(don’t just take my word for it! read here:8.84 x 10 = 88.4mgs total of zantac for the dayyour bottle says 15mgs/mlso that means for every one ml of zantac liquid, your baby is getting 15mgs of the medicine zantacso 88.4 divided by 15 = 5.9 mls, total for the day, of zantacyou can give in two doses and the two doses can be ‘uneven’ w/ the higher dose at night, since this seems to be the worst timehellbennt2011-01-05 19:55:30

InactiveThanks so much. I am going to get him into his pediatrician in the next two days and bring this up.

InactiveJust realized that our Zantac dose is pretty low. I have decided to up his dose from 1.5mL twice a day to three times a day to see if that helps. I will see how this works in the next week.

Keymasterhere’s a link about night-waking and milk being the culprit- this is what makes me think that your baby’s night-time issues may be due to the soy:

KeymasterWelcome! I am a newbie as well as distressed mom. You have certainly come to the right place! As my situation is similiar in some ways, I feel as though I am not a very good person to provide advice, but I can say that hellbennt calls it like she sees it… make sure you read everything suggested… and re-read if necessary (I did). Hang in there. Best wishes to you. You are not alone.

InactiveHang in there you are not alone! Sometimes I just come to read these formus to realize that and to help me get through the days when I feel like I can’t take it anymore.
I can totally relate to the hour long feedings. We did that with my son until he was close to 6 months. It felt like all we were doing was feeding and it was so horrible b/c he would scream in pain. When we stopped ‘forcing’ the bottle it seemed to be slightly better. He eats much less though and struggles with weight gain. He is currently below the 5th percentile for weight but it’s the best we can do for now. The GI Specialist did say babies can develop some type of anorexia which is a refusal to eat once they feel that eating equals pain.Do you think maybe he is waking up at night b/c he is hungry and he fights the bottle during the day? What does the dr plan on doing to help the situation?Keep us posted : )NatalieJanuary 18, 2011 at 4:32 pm #67651Anonymous
Inactivebabies can take alot longer than 6 months to outgrow reflux. my daughter was born witha a hiatal hernia and her reflux was so bad we could have medicated her till her eyeballs were swimming and she would not have gotten better. she ahd to have a fundo just before she turned 10 months. the only way i could get her to sleep was topropp myself with pillows so i wouldn’t roll over on her, and then get her latched on nursing. as long as she stayed latched on, it soothed her throat and i could get some sleep.
