InactiveOkay, so I took my 7 week old to her two week follow up after a dairy/soy ED. Her stools were negative for blood this time. After a horrible night last night, I begged for something different than zantac. My dd was 9lbs6oz two weeks ago and is now 9lbs15oz. She prescribed her Prevacid 6mg/ml compounded (not flavored I think) 1ml by mouth 1/2 hour before breakfast daily. I am concerned after reading the posts about wrong dosages if this will be enough.
Also, dd had an appt. with the allergist to see about possible foods she could be intolerable to in my breast milk. They told me the would do skin testing on her at her age, then I get there and the doc says no way is my baby having a reaction to cows milk through my breastmilk and that it is very rare she is reacting to things I am eating?!?!? I am so confused.

InactiveUGH.
first of all, the compound is being made incorrectly. in order to be stable, it needs to be made between 2-4 mg/ml. you have to make abolutely sure there are no flavorings of any kind, and also need to make sure it is made with 16.8% sodium bicarb. so they already got you off to a bad start. that is really frustrating.
here is the link you can print this out and give to the pharmacy on how to make a proper compound:
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4505&a mp;a mp;a mp;KW=pharmacy+compounded+PPI
your daughter is on 6 mg a day. that doesnt sound like it is going to do much. i would fight for the marci-kids.com dosing.
my son was started on 24 mg at 3 months and 11 pounds.
compounds do not need to be given 30 minutes before meals. they are immdeiate release suspensions.
lastly, allergy testing is highly innacurate and does not detect intolerances. many refluxers are MSPI -cannot handle any milk or soy protein. my ped was fighting with me about this but i switched to neocate anyway-and i had a different child within a few days.
in order to see results you have to go with your gut and fight for things your daughter needs. many doctors just do not fully understand infant reflux.
good luck!

InactiveCan I give it to her three times a day to start without docs consent?
May 29, 2007 at 6:05 pm #34872Anonymous
InactiveAlso, can I continue giving her zantac at bedtime?

Keymasteryou can do whatever you want to do, lol

ok I’m sounding like a snmart aleck & that’s not my intention

what I mean is that you have to do what you have to do & we can’t tell you to medicate your baby any differently then what your doctor told you…
this is what I would do:
try & get the prevacid compounded properly. if the pharmacist won’t humour you (use this word & a big smile
& beg) the nFAX the doctor & say THANK YOU! then say Could you please humour me & write out the prescription this way? _________. THANK YOU
) then call the office to tell the fax is coming/came. then call the office later to follow up so you can get the prescriptionI wouldn’t push the doctor for more than one thing at a time…THEN after you get the compound done PROPERLY, you have the choice of increasing the dose on your own, etc
What I also would do is to continue with the zantac at the HIGHEST dose for baby’s weight until you get the prevacid straightened out…so that would be 10mgs per kilo…
ETA (edited to add): give the zantac 4hrs seperate from the prevacid
food most certanly can affect baby- there’s a difference b/t allergy & intolerances- go to pg2 of the ‘main’ mspi’ page to read a really good explanation

InactiveI will say that I went by the marci-kids recommendations. My dr. told me to give Justice one dose, but I did what marci-kids told me to do. The marci-kids dosing is what worked for us. Also about the allergy thing. Justice had an allergy to milk. He started out with horrible and I do mean horrible cradle cap that was all over his head, ears, and face and it then turend into exzema. So, I took out dairy and beef. What do you know the exzema went away. I had some dairy and beef and the exzema was back. I took it out and tryed it back in many times and every time I tryed it he broke out in exzema. Most drs. know nothing about bfing. If you talk to a bfing expert they will tell you that many babies react to milk proteins in the mothers bm.

InactiveThat is interesting, I noticed this around her eyebrows a lot. No beef? I guess I will stick to chiken and rice. I will try the prescribed dose and call if I need an increase, my Ped is pretty good about doing what I want. Our first dose is in the morning, wish me luck,
BTW…anyone notice their babies having a sensitivity to artificial sweetners?

trying the prescribed dose is fine if it was compounded properly- otherwise it just might not be effective at all…
as for chicken & rice- I would try to get chicken w/o hormones, etc, just to be safe, for 2 weeks – people have had success trying the TED but also people have had success trying to cut out one or some things at a time…there are a LOT of posts about how to do the diet, what to eat etc

the TED calls for free range turkey & lamb…
hang in there!
it’s hard (I did it) and for me it was worth it- my results were ‘different’ in that I found out it was not MSPI for Jonah…however, there were foods that affected him that I cut out of my diet…
