InactiveHi! Please help!We are new parents to a beautiful baby boy–Anthony is now just over 4 months old, and has been diagnosed with reflux. He is generally happy during the day, but up every 1-2 hours at night, writhing around and twisting his head. just miserable. It breaks my heart!

We’ve got a wedge under the crib sheet, and he is on Zantac 2ml twice a day, and Prevacid 15mg once a day. We have him on Neutramigin formula, which we thicken with rice cereal. He often writhes around when eating, and will only REALLY eat when he’s tired. The doc is considering sending him to a GI specialist, but it sounds like lots of people only had relief with 30mg of Prevacid? Also, how long did it take the Prevacid to work–he has been on it for 6 days…Any advice would be great-Thanks!

InactiveHello and welcome,
Sorry to hear your little guy is so uncomfortable. I’ve had two reflux babies so I sure know how hard it is.

Myles did finally get relief with 30mg of Prevacid. Do you think you could talk his doctor into raising his dose? I was able to convince Myles’ doctor by showing her the information from http://www.marci-kids.com .
You could try splitting his Prevacid dose into two 7.5 mg doses. Most babies do much better with two or three doses per day. It does have to be several hours apart from the Zantac, though. Are you giving the Prevacid on an empty stomach and following it up 30 minutes later with a feeding? That’s important in getting the full effect of the medication.
It usually takes 14 days to see the full effect of a PPI medicaiton.
As for Nutramigen I’ve read so many posts here from mom’s whose babies didn’t do well on it. I think it contains a lot of corn syrup solids (or something that is made from corn). It seems some babies don’t tolerate corn products very well. Have you tried Alimentum? The powedered Alimentum also contains a lot of corn, but the RTF does not.
Be sure to check out Laura’s Groupie Intro (stickied in the Introduce Yourself Forum). It has lots of valuable informaiton which may help you.
Good luck, and I’m glad you found us.

InactiveHi!
I don’t have much to add to what Christine said. My son is also on Prevacid. It took about 2 weeks until we saw the full affect. Bryce is actually only on 18 mg of Prevacid and it works great for him. Originally, that was his marci-kids dose, but we’ve never had to increase it as he’s grown. So some babies don’t need the 30mg, but it seems like a lot of them do! If he doesn’t improve after another week or so, you might need to ask for a higher dose.
Good luck with everything! I hope that prevacid starts helping soon.

Inactiveshane is also on 15 mg prevacid… about a month after going on the 15mg and the alimentum he was soo much better.. we never increased his dosage either. he is very happy during the day.. but at night he does squirm and toss soo much! i have been speaking with the GI nurse and she said it might not be able to be stopped.. because she doesnt think it is necessarily the acid bothering him but the reflux making him uncomfortable when he is trying to sleep. so, i would say that your son may not need a higher dosage either because you say he is happy while awake.. and that could be normal for reflux babies to not sleep well.. BUT the whole part that he wont eat too well concerns me and i would definately start look into a higher dosage if that continues…
