Hi, ladies. We just started our three-month baby boy on Prilosec last night. He’s had two doses so far, and the main thing we notice is that his tummy last night hurt more and today he essentially refuses to breastfeed. He seems hungry but he fights the breast, ‘banging’ his head, arching his body, etc. He doesn’t seem in pain, just simply will not eat. Any ideas? Shall we stop the Prilosec until we can consult our GI? Many thanks, Elie
what form of prilosec? I’ve never heard of this…hmm…
what about trying a squirt of mylanta before nursing? just make sure it’s been at least 2 hrs before or after the prilosec dose- maybe a 1 ml squirt will calm him down? try this in a dark room?
My best guess is that it has to do with his reflux and the Prilosec has not had time to start working yet. Refusing to eat or fighting the breast or bottle is a classic sign of reflux. Frequent waking in pain is also a symptom of reflux. Laura’s idea about a little Mylanta before feeding is a good idea. I’d stick with the Prilosec and give it time to work. It takes about two weeks for most babies.
