new to reflux – please help! – UPDATE!

Hi and welcome, by the time I’ve gotton here I have forgotten a lot of your questions. But I think Alana did have colic as well as reflux. She did scream for hours around the evening time (although this is apparently when most bubs have their screaming hour). Around 3 months though we were on the right meds and formula (i couldn’t breasfeed) and the witching hour ended. I

I used the packets, and they are impossible to divide. I wish we had solutabs here, I definately would have given them a go (or Zegerid which we also don’t have).

On the positive side we have recently weaned Alana from meds and she is now med free. I think for the most part she has recovered from her reflux…although I must admit on a couple of occasions I have given her some mylanta or gaviscon. But we can live with this.Overall though there are no signs of any chronic constant reflux.

Thanks so much for your help and advise! I’ve been reading like crazy the last 3 days.

We gave Lydia her 1st dose of Zantac last evening. She wasn’t too fussy and went to bed around 10:00 pm. Much to our surprise, she slept 10 hours straight!!!!! She may have gone longer but I woke her up to eat. She just turned 2 mo. today. I cannot believe this. She’s gone 5 hours thru the night but 10 hours????!!!! This morning I gave her another dose and she went right down for a nap and has been sleeping for 1.5 straight. She’s NEVER done that. She has never napped more than 45 minutes and that’s on a good day. Usually her naps are 20 minutes before she’d wake up screaming in a pile of vomit. I cannot believe this. It has to be the Zantac working already. My poor baby though. How much pain was she in before? I don’t even want to think about it.

You better believe from here on out, I’m staying on top of these meds though to make sure she doesn’t have a relapse. I’ll bug the doctors like crazy if I have to. I’ve read quite a bit about the Zantac but still not sure exactly when the best time is to give it to DD. The directions say 1 ml twice a day. I’ve read that 3 times at day at her age is more appropriate but it’s working twice a day, I’m assuming we can go with that as long as it’s working. Do I give it to her before she eats? How soon before? How long does it typically last?

Part of me wants to stop the elimination diet that I’ve started. I’m not doing it 100% correct anyhow. It is definitely hard to stay on that diet but it’s just another thing I need to research more and find out what I CAN eat!

good news about the zantac! figure out the maximum dose for her weight so that you know you have room to increase it if need be (I can help if you post her weight)…as I’ve written in my welcome/intro, most babies seem to plateau on zantac so just keep this in mind…also I hear ya on the diet- in my post above I say that *I* wouldn’t do it just yet, but that’s me- when I did it I was DESPERATE and the zantac wasn’t working- I got on the internet and well the rest is history

That’s great that the Zantac is helping her. A ten hour stretch of sleep must have been heaven for both of you!

I hope the Zantac continues to do the trick for her but keep in mnd that Zantac is a weight sensitive drug so as she gains weight she will likely need dosage increases, and if it stops working altogether you can look into switching to a PPI.

As for when to give it I think you can give it anytime, with or without food, but I did read that at least one mom here said her doc told her to give it 30 minutes before a feeding.

Oh, I just love the name, Lydia! It’s such a pretty name.

I know that many baby’s reflux (including my Abbys) is not able to be controlled by an H2 blocker like Zantac or Pepcid but Kayla’s (my oldest daughter) reflux was well controlled with only using Pepcid until she was 9 months old when she outgrew the reflux. Yes, we had to increase the dose as she got heavier but there is hope that Zantac could work for you. But it is good to know there are other routes if the Zantac doesn’t work. With Abby, we tried Pepcid, then Prevacid, then finally Zegerid, which was the greatest thing we ever did for her (and us).

I do not have an infant scale but I weighed DD on our home scale. She weighs just under 12 lbs. There is no way to know the ounces. She will be weighed Monday morning at her check up. Any help with Zantac dosage would be appreciated. Have most of you purchased infant scales by now?

DD is napping like a champ today. I am totally stunned. We’ve been through so much in the last 5 weeks. She is still spitting up quite a bit but I know that is normal reflux or no reflux. As long as she’s not in pain when it comes up.

Anyone else’s infant burp excessively? I burp DD twice during mid feeds. This last feeding she burped at least 5-7 times within one hour.

I appreciate every bit of info you all have given me. I appreciate you taking the time to post.

On a side note. I noticed earlier, I referred to my infant as Lydia. Actually, my 2 mo. old is Abigail and my 3 year old is Lydia! Oops!

12lbs = 5.5kilos

zantac range is 5-10mgs per kilo so at the low side:

5.5 x 5 = 27.5mgs total for the day, with it being 15mgs per mg (it says on your zantac bottle) so it’s

1.8mls total for the day on the low side, divided up anyway you want

now for the highest dose:

5.5 x 10 = 55mgs total for the day, with it being 15mgs per mg (it says on your zantac bottle) so it’s

3.7mls for the day on the highest side, divided up anyway you want

SO: your 2mls a day is just above the ‘lowest’ dose- you have room to increase

Yes, my refluxers were big burpers too. There seems to be a connection between reflux and burping. Myles had to burp after every 1/2 ounce or ounce during feedings and Ellie used to wake up and need to be burped all night long. Myles’ burping problem improved once his meds were right but it didn’t completely resolve until he outgrew his reflux.

Abigail is a pretty name too!

Ok well I think Abigail could definitely use a higher dose. She seems to do well 2-3 hours after each dose but then it doesn’t last. She’s waking up again from her naps in piles of spit up. I think I’ll try to give her a little more during the day…so she’ll get it 3 times a day, instead of two. And like I said before, she’ll see her doc on Monday, so I’ll check with her at that time.
