InactiveHi. Just found your site.. I was wondering if anyone out there is in the same boat as me. My baby is on Prevacid solutab and just found out it is on backorder from the manufacturer til end of Dec?! So, Pediatrician recommends OTC med Prilosec (5mg). I was wondering why not the OTC Prevacid 24hr? and just divide up the granules? I get the impression that my ped did not even know it existed and feel very confused.. (btw-my baby is 5 months and has silent reflux). Any help/suggestions is appreciated!!!

Keymasterhi & welcome!first of all, check baby’s dose to make sure it’s ‘proper’Prevacid 101:
scroll to the last page of this post, (it’s actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1note: the info from the link above raves about bufferbabies/caracream, which is no longer available
if your doctor is RXing a PROPER PPI dose, then I’d say to go for zegerid packets- you must get the 40mg packets and it’s a RX and this way you don’t need to time the meds around mealsotherwise, I’d ‘go’ for getting prevacid capsules and open them up & you give the ‘beads’when you give the beads (or the solutabs, for that matter), you need to give on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later- when administering the beads, you give w/ 1/2 tsp of applesauceI emailed dr philips (he’s at the forefront of the research of PPIs and infants- he’s at the U of Missouri & he & his team created zegerid- then they sold it to saturus, who now owns/sells it) about zegerid and here is what he’s said- I’m waiting for more clarification:Remember to get 40mg packets only – not 20mg packets; and remember add 6.5mL water to the powder (in a syringe) and shake – then add 10mL Mylanta Cherry Supreme
remember 40mg packets not 20mg packets (because the 20mg packets and 40mg packets have the exact same amt of sodium bicarbonate) so per each mg of dose, the 20mg ends up with twice as much bicarb (too much)
Keep in refrigerator and it is stable for a week

InactiveThanks for the response Laura. There is a TON of info on this site… Trying to make head/tails of all of it and find recent info..! Not sure if my 5 month old will swallow applesauce or not. I need to figure something out quick as i only have 5 days worth of her Prevacid Solutabs left! ahhh. 🙁

InactiveCan it be diluted in milk? I know the solutabs will but what about the beads? I would ask your baby’s doctor or the nurse before doing any of this. Do you have
health insurance or short term health insurance to help with the doctor fees?LannaT2011-11-04 11:39:14

InactiveI am not sure..My ped said to use 1/2 of a 10mg Prilosec. (I would rather stay with Prevacid since i know it works.) I just don’t know about the applesauce. Also, I could not find a link to recommended dosing… Hmm…

Keymasteryou can NOT give w/ milk!
please read through the Medicine Forum, there are ‘stickies’ there, these are posts that are kept at the top
in order for the PPI to be effective, they must be given on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meall’ 30 minutes later.this is why most doctors go ahead & presecribe a compound, a liquid form of the medicine made at the pharmacy-in THEORY this is great because w/ a compound you don’t have to time giving the medicine around an empty stomach. HOWEVER, the vast majority of compounds are not made correctly, so that they are not effective- if they are effective at all, they then loose their effectiveness after a week of being made- they are not stable. This is why caracream was a godsend! It was a way to make your own compound at home and it was stable & you didn’t have to wrry about giving on an empty stomach, etc…Just this past month, the U of Missouri has pulled the plug on the funding for the University selling it!!In the meantime, ZEGERID is available. This was made by the same team and this does not have to be timed around meals.Really, all of this is explained in a scientific way in the ‘stickies’ of the Medicine Forum and a lot is spelled out in Prevacid 101.First and foremost, the proper dose is needed, then the proper form…5mgs of prilosec is a very low dose….it can be difficult to get a ped to go ahead w/ the U of Missouri (also known as Marci-kids – you might find this in the posts on this board) dosing guidelines. In fact, it can be hard to get a ped GI to go along! I was so lucky that our ped GI was open to reading the research and, coincidently had actually done a fellowship at the U of Missouri…but really, I had to TELL him how to dose…ps: sorry if my tome comes across as harsh!I’m just in a hurry and I get frustrated, not at YOU, but at the doctors out there- I’ve been on this board for EIGHT YEARS and it kills me that more doctors don’t know their stuff and babies have to keep suffering! This is why I don’t leave here. My son is 8 and healthy and I don’t have any ‘reason’ to keep trying to help others, but I just can’t bring myself to leave when there is so much misinformation out there and babies in pain

InactiveThank you for your response Laura and the dosing chart! Looks like I am giving 7 times the recommended dose on the chart?! Or I missing something and need another cup of coffee! LOL. I know it works for her. I give my five-month-old baby 7.5mg twice a day of Prevacid Solutab. You are right, it is very disheartening to see the info out there and the lack of knowledge about this that peds have… (sigh).

Keymaster15mgs seems fine- it’s not 7x the amount, lol…
as for applesauce, you can give & wash it down w/ water- it should work w/ a 5 month oldNovember 3, 2011 at 12:57 pm #69288Anonymous
InactiveLaura – I posted on another forum to let you know I sent an e-mail to Kira. Came on here to see if zegerid is an alternative I could use since no more caracream max. My son is almost 4 months and takes prevacid (with caracream) 5 ml three times a day.
It looks like zegerid works too? That is over the counter right? And I don’t have to wait to feed? Also, from the post above it looks like Dr. Phillips gave you some info on making something similar using mylanta and zegerid. When he talks about 20 vs 40 mg packets he means the zegerid right? Is what you wrote above for a single dose? How many 40 mg packets – just one?
Thanks for your help!!

Keymasterzegerid needs to be RX’d to get the packets…
there IS zegerid OTC, but that cannot be given to babies – you need to by caracreamZ and this is no longer availableif you need something over the counter, you must find prevacid or prilosec capsules. then, you open them up & take out the beads.you give the beads with a teaspoon of applesuace, on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later.November 4, 2011 at 1:38 pm #69299Anonymous
InactiveThank you. Calling my ped today to see if I can get a prescription for zegerid. We did prevacid on the empty stomach route before we received our Caracream. I don’t want to go back to that method because it was really difficult to wait 30 minutes to feed our son. He is a healthy eater and lets us know when he is hungry…we couldn’t handle the 30 minutes of crying.
One last question. Do you have any information on dosing? I know my ped will prescribe too low of a dose. I used Dr. Phillips guidelines (based on weight) for the prevacid dose. Is there similar info for zegerid? Would you know where I could find dosing info?
Thanks,
