InactiveMy DS is 1 month old and about 1.5 weeks ago started screaming/crying during bottles, arching his back, and not finishing feedings. We switched to soy formula, which didn’t do anything. His ped thinks it’s reflux, even though he doesn’t spit up much, but seems to be in pain. So she started him on 15mg of Prevacid daily. We give the Solutab to him in a syringe. He’s been on it 5 days, and although the number of feedings where he indicates pain has lessened, we are still having problems with the arching and crying during bottles. Does it take long for Prevacid to work? how long should we give it before taking him in again? Just when I think it’s better for a few bottles, the next one he is in pain again and I just don’t know what to do for him! Also, our ped didn’t mention anything about WHEN to administer the Prevacid. Is there a best time?

InactiveHi, and welcome. Sorry you are going through this with your baby. Reflux can be so difficult to deal with on a daily basis.
Prevacid should be given on an empty stomach (at least 2 hours since last the meal) and then followed by a full meal 30 minutes later. Also, it works much better if it is given more than once a day. Is he better following the dose of Prevacid? Most babies are getting it two to three times per day.
Not all babies with reflux throw up or spit up much. Some have Silent Reflux (like my second baby). These babies have terrible pain from acid backing up into their esophagus, but they don’t spit up or throw up much. Some babies have Reflux with vomiting (like my third child).
PPI drugs like Prevacid should help with the pain by stopping or reducing the acid production if the dose is high enough and if it is given frequently enough. Here’s a web site where you can check on PPI dosing for infants and get some more information about Reflux. http://www.marci-kids.com/
It generally takes about two weeks to get the best results from the medication, but I noticed some improvement within days with Myles, and continued improvement over the next week or two.
Good luck and glad you found us.
