Hi
My baby was diagnosed with reflux 2.5 weeks ago. She is now 10 weeks old. She started on 5mg Nexium in the morning, and 5 in the evening/afternoon. She did amazingly well for the first week. Then she started getting very gassy and her gas smelled horrible. This got worse each day and she started crying from cramping and pushing to try and pass her gas.
She also then started vomiting about a week after the cramping started. I took her back to the doctor as she would cry during feedings due to the cramping. As soon as she passes gas, she feeds again. She also stopped sleeping at night to due cramps (she already doesn’t sleep in the day at all). The doctor then ordered an upper GI test which confirmed that she does have reflux but I am waiting for him to call me today to get the full results. I asked whether the nexium could cause the gas as this started a week after nexium and he said while it might be a side effect, he doubts it. But out of desperateness i stopped her evening dosage of nexium and while she still has gas and cramps, it is so much better. She doesn’t cry from it anymore.
Now the doctors here are really not helping much and I dont have much options for switching doctors. He hasn’t recommended thickening her formula at all which I think we should at least try. She is on a whey protein lactose free formula (Similac total comfort).
My question is, has anyone had similar gas and cramping discomfort with their LO’s on Nexium? Is there something else that is just as good as Nexium but with less side effects?
When did you start thickening your baby formula and did you do this with a thickener, an AR formula, or rice cereal?
