InactiveHaley is 4 months old and she is on alimentum and 18mg of prevacid divided into two doses daily. She spits up alot all day long and during the morning and early afternoon hours she isn’t to cranky but the late afternoon and night are just unbearable. Could it be that the medicine needs to be increased or that maybe her formula needs to be switched? My two oldest children both had refulx but they were happy spitters. I would give anything for Haley to be a happy spitter even if I did have to change my clothes and hers 4 or 5 times daily. Does anyone have some good advice for me.

InactivePersonally sounds like she might need a med increase, How long has she been on this dose of prevacid? Are you giving on an empty stomach and waiting 30-60 minutes before feeding (if she isn’t on compounded)? if she is on compounded is it being made properly? Just thoughts.

InactiveHey! When are you giving her her last dose? She might need three doses b/c the med is just wearing off by the end of the day. That’s what happened with my dd. Also, how long has she been on the formula? These trials really need time to work. Sometimes two weeks sometimes longer
Also, alimentum doesn’t have ALL of the proteins broken down so she might need a super hypo-allergenic formula like Neocate but you know, I don’t know that much about formula so I’ll let someone else chime in. I hope things get better for Haley at night! When nights are rough, for me the next day always seems rough too

InactiveHaley’s medicine is compounded into a liquid form. I give 9mg in the morning(7am) 30 min before she eats(which is very hard to do) and then 9mg around 5pm. She has been on the alimentum for at least 6 weeks. My daycare provider is really pushing me to take her off of it because she spits up so much but Haley honestly has been the least fussiest on this formula. she was on soybefore but during that stint her med wasnt even close to being the right dose. so i dont know if it was the med or formula. I just dont know what to do!!!

InactiveI agree with others…I would look into getting a different form of prevacid. As others have said, it is very RARELY made correctly and sometimes it’s like you’re not giving any medicine at all because the compound is ineffective. We tried a compound for several weeks and did not see ANY improvement until we started on a different PPI.
I would keep her on alimentum for a while longer. Unless she has DGE, the proper formula and medicine won’t stop her spit up. Unfortunately!! Even as the happiest baby on the block, Sarah still spit up until she was almost 10 months old!
Good luck!

InactiveI was using compounded and we had a terrible time at night and when I finally switched to a compounded pharmacy, they did make it correctly and it worked fine, but tasted horrible and I fought every last dose.
I think for the first 5 months I was paying $50 a month for water…..
It was that in effective……..We recently switched to solutabs and I think things are better. And sooooooooo much easier to give!August 2, 2007 at 10:43 am #40333Anonymous
InactiveWe are in a similar boat with Brian who is almost 3 months old. He is on Prevacid solutabs 22.5 mg plus carafate and he does fine usually in the morning and afternoon but cries more in the early evening, doesn’t want to finish the last bottle before bedtime, and isn’t sleeping well at night. I am thinking of asking him to be switched to Prilosec.

InactiveMy son was on a good dose of Prevacid and Alimentum and never slept well either at that age (sometimes still doesn’t but that’s another story). He would cry out all night long. Anyway, looking back, I wonder if the Neocate would have made a difference so I would be willing to try a new formula if I were you.

InactiveHow much does Brian weigh, and in how many doses do you give the prevacid? It may again be that it needs to be upped and split into 3 doses. We finally got Dagney to 30 mg/day (10mg 3x/day) at 4 months and it did the trick. She’s always been a great night sleeper, though, although just before we got her on the Neocate and good dose of Prevaccid she did start waking at night again, once we started the neocate/prevacid combo she was back to sleeping through again! dfb052007-08-03 09:56:28

InactiveI think Brian is somewhere between 13-14 lbs (haven’t weighed him in 2 weeks but he was 12 1/2 lbs last time he was weighed). I asked the GI about upping his dose to 30 mg and she didn’t seem comfortable with that. She said 22.5 mg is the max for his weight. Do you rememeber how much Dagney weighed when you went to 30 mg 3 x a day. My older son was almost 4 months old when he was switched to 40 mg Nexium split up 3 x a day but that was a different GI who moved out of state
We go back to the GI in two weeks and I am going to ask again at the visit if things haven’t improved. Thanks. -
