… would it be horrible to just stop giving him formula, if he’s on vitamins?
This morning he woke super early (teething ) and took 3oz. Two hours later he had 4oz. At 4p he took 2.5oz and then refused his bedtime bottle. Bedtime is so close to dinner, that he almost always refuses the bedtime bottle. He is eating solids relatively well. I haven’t started milk yet. He will only take maybe 2-3oz from a sippy at mealtimes, so I don’t have high hopes for a huge milk intake.
Would it be so terrible to just stop bottles? I’m just so sick of making bottles that get totally wasted, but I’m worried about him getting enough fluid to stay hydrated.
Does anyone know the minimum amount of fluid they need at this age to stay hydrated?
March 8, 2006 at 8:07 pm #3329AnonymousInactiveWe were told that a baby over the age of 1 needs 16 oz to stay hydrated. I’m not sure if that means it must be 16 oz of milk or whether it is 16 oz of fluids in general. I would offer him his bottle, and if he refuses, then pour it into the sippy and see if he will finish it.
March 8, 2006 at 8:59 pm #3337hellbenntKeymasterhave you tried rice milk? potato milk? there have been recent threads about this…I just searched, here it is: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4755&a mp;KW=potato
jonah didn’t drink milk until about 18 months but he drank tons of water and ate dairy and lots of foods with calcium…
we always kept (& keep) a sippy of water out and available to him at all times…
March 8, 2006 at 9:13 pm #3343AnonymousInactiveWhy do they always give 16 oz as the magic number? We’ve been told that since Hailey was 8 weeks old…
March 9, 2006 at 8:38 am #3370AnonymousInactiveI’m not sure, but I do know that we’ve been told that there are liquids in lots of foods too that will also keep them hydrated, so our doctor told us not to get hung up on the amount of actual liquid that he drinks, but just to make sure he still has wet diapers, tears, etc. If he’s doing all that I wouldn’t worry about it!
March 9, 2006 at 10:19 am #3381AnonymousInactiveI was always told a minimum 18 oz by Hailey’s Ped. When you ask, they have to tell you something. We all know that this “magic” number doesn’t really apply to all babies because lots of ours are gaining, growing and staying hydrated on way less.
Sharon ~ The amount of fluids a baby needs depends on the baby. I can’t remember if Nate has any issues with eating/drinking bottles (when he’s not teething)? What is his normal intake? When you wean, you can expect this to go down but I would bet in a week or two of being off the bottle, he will start drinking more from a cup. Most of my friends with “normal” babies successfully weaned from the bottle at a year (sometimes sooner) with absolutely no problems. They never worried about their babies getting X amount of fluids. I would introduce milk before you wean just to make sure he’s going to be able to tolerate it.
