InactiveWondering if anyone else in Canada has had success with omeprazole in some form OTHER than compounded with sodium bicarb?
The pharmacist here said that is the only “recipe” available in Canada, and I am at a loss of what other options to suggest. My son tried omeprazole earlier (at 3-4mo) but it was not well tolerated in that solution. Since then we’ve been on Zantac (1.5ml 2x daily) but recently have hit a wall and the zantac seems to be less effective.
Is omeprazole formulated differently at all in Canada? What is the best way to administer it, and does it have to be compounded?
My sweet little babe is 8 months old, 20lbs and thriving….except for sleep! We co-sleep and I can hear the reflux coming up in the night and he is far from comfortable.
Thanks for any help!

Keymasteryou can try getting the med in capsule form and then you open the capsule and give the beads. you give them mixed w/ 1tsp of applesauce, on an empty stomach & follow w/ a meal 30 minutes later.

InactiveWe are in Toronto and NEVER had any success with compounded omeprazole (called losec). Back then, which was almost 5 years ago now, the hospital for sick children was even saying that compounded losec wasn’t good. Problem back then was that there weren’t any other options. I’d suspect that your losec compound isn’t being made correctly. Check out the link in the med section about pharmacy compounded PPIs as I can’t remember the details. How many mg/ml is your compound? There’s also probably not enough bicarb in it. What’s is daily dose in total? That’s another problem, Canada is notorious for low doses of PPI for children. If the dose is too low, it won’t work, and if the compound is not made correctly it won’t work.
Laura’s suggestion is a good one. You can try that. Another good option is to order buffer babies through marci-kids. We used caracream, which is what buffer babies was called back then as it was a bit different. They’ll probably send you a free sample to try… at least they used to. Check out http://www.marci-kids.com for details. Finally, if your baby eats and drinks well, then a great option is the prevacid fast tab (called solutab) in the US. This wasn’t around when we were going through this, but it tastes good, and dissolves quickly in the mouth or in a syringe so that you don’t need to give very much med. You give on an empty stomach and then follow up with a meal 3-60 minutes later. We found that for us, prevacid worked the best. We tried all forms that we could get, and finally settled on prevacid in caracream which we ordered from marci-kids. But again, the dose had to be high enough. Good luck.November 24, 2010 at 7:42 am #67309hellbennt

InactiveThanks for the info. We saw the Doc last night and he prescribed the omeprazole in a 10mg tablet, which he suggested that we crush and put in a little applesauce to administer. Any experience with that?
I’ve gotten such conflicting info from different pharmacists, online info and my doctor! The Zantac is officially done working, so I am hoping that this route will offer some relief.
Thanks,
Rachael
