Hi I’m new to this group! I have 3 month old b/g twins and unfortunately my son has pretty bad reflux. We started on zantac which worked for about two weeks and then his pediatrician prescribed him compounded omeprazole last Monday which needless to say was crap. After every dose the poor lil guy would howl in pain. I stopped giving him the compound on Sunday, ordered a TummyCare Max kit, and then went to Walmart to get OTC omeprazole. But the omeprazole was in tablet form not a capsule and since I needed to administer it to him till Thursday with no buffer I had to get the OTC lansoprazole which was in capsule form. Anyway I have been mixing the beads with a small amount of applesauce for now but once my TummyCare Max kit comes I won’t be limited to only being able to use capsule form. Should I stick with the lansoprazole or go back to omeprazole? I noticed on th omeprazole his sleeping became a little disturbed. He usually sleeps till 8 and all of the sudden he started waking up around 4 or 5. But then this has continued on the lansoprazole thought he’s only been on it for 48 hours. Not sure what to do or if it would screw with him to switch him now! Any help would be awesome! Thanks!
November 3, 2012 at 10:45 pm #71137AnonymousInactiveHello and welcome to this site! I’m sorry your questions haven’t been addressed before now. 🙁
I personally don’t know a lot about the different types of meds out there and how they work. My first son took Zantac, then Reglan, then Prevacid which seemed to help more than the others. He was on Prevacid till age 3. My second son was started on Prevacid before he was a week old and stayed on it until he was a year old.
Laura on this site knows alot about different meds and can help you a lot I bet. If she doesn’t come on soon to help you out then I will notify her. 🙂
In the meantime you can look at my blog and read about the things that we found to help our children with their reflux and milk intolerances. You might find it of interest!
November 4, 2012 at 9:26 pm #71140hellbenntKeymasterppis that aren’t in one of the products, don’t cover night time reflux; there’s a scientific reason for this, something about delayed release & more acid is produced at night, but anyway, this might be the reason for sleep interruption, not one kind of ppi over another…me, I’d go for Prevacid w/ tummy care max base Prevacid is what helped my son, more than Prilosec did
November 6, 2012 at 1:37 pm #71147AnonymousInactiveThanks for your responses. I thought I had read somewhere that when using TCM the PPI becomes immediate release and then it will work at night unlike a regular delayed release. I guess I should just dose his zantac right before bedtime for now. Hopefully once his reflux gets under control it won’t be an issue. Fingers crossed!
November 6, 2012 at 1:45 pm #71148hellbenntKeymasteryou’re right but somehow I thought you weren’t using TCM yet?
November 6, 2012 at 1:48 pm #71149AnonymousInactiveOh sorry. Yeah I got my kit and started on Friday. I’m on day #5 and the acid battle’s going strong, so is the gas. If you have any experience with TCM or BB maybe you could help me. I’m trying to figure out when to dose his zantac and maintain a four hour window of three PPI doses. I originally was giving him the zantac twice a day but since I started the TCM I’ve only been able to squeeze one dose in the morning. So right now I give him Zantac at 8, PPI at 12:30, 4:30, and 8:30 (bedtime). I’m not sure where I could fit in a second dose. It already seems like the PPIs are too closesly spaced together. How far apart should the PPI doses be from each other? I’ve also read that zantac works better at night so maybe I should switch things around? Or throw in one of the 3 PPI doses in the middle of the night? Any suggestions?
November 6, 2012 at 9:22 pm #71151hellbenntKeymasterWhat day of PPI are you on? If its still under 2 weeks, I’d give more Zantac at a high dose ( 10 mgs per kg)
Once on PPI for a while, you can try spacing Zantac closer, say 3 hrs. So much of this is trial & error…i might try PPI first thing in a.m. & dose from there ?
November 8, 2012 at 1:51 pm #71160AnonymousInactiveThanks Laura. I’m on day 7. No real improvement yet but I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I’m so nervous that I’m giving the wrong PPI. I keep reading that prevacid causes insomnia and appetite suppressant. Both of which he has to some degree but for now I’m attributing it to his reflux not being under control as well as the gas he’s experiencing from the mix. I’m sure I’d feel the same way if he was on prilosec though lol. I just hate the trial and error part! I just want to get him pain free so he can be happy and his twin sister can start having all the attention ; )
November 8, 2012 at 4:05 pm #71161hellbenntKeymasterwell, for what it’s worth, my son never had side effects from the prevacid. It’s only lately that I’ve heard this so much and I’ve been on this board for nine years now…hang in there!
November 8, 2012 at 4:31 pm #71165AnonymousInactiveThanks for the reassurance! One week down and one to go!
November 13, 2012 at 2:29 pm #71190AnonymousInactivefrom personal experience and experience with my children–I prefer prevacid. also, it can up to 2-3 weeks before the meds heal enough damage, so it may seem like the meds are not working when they just need a little time to do their job.
also, our ped Gi gave my daughter carafate to take before bedtime–you might check into that.
November 13, 2012 at 4:29 pm #71191AnonymousInactiveThanks I’ll definitely look into that. I was getting scared at day 7 that he’d be one of the few it doesn’t work on, but it’s day 12 now and he’s doing great! He hasn’t had any major reflux episodes in a few days now, he’s sleeping way better, smiling more and just seems relaxed. Two days ago we even moved him and his twin sis out of our room and into their nursery. He’s doing tummy time without spitting up and even rolled over for the first time. He’s still dealing with the gas and that causes some crying during feedings. But overall much better.
November 13, 2012 at 4:37 pm #71192AnonymousInactiveI think it was day 14 on prevacid when my daughter slept in her bassinet for 4 hours during the night.
twins are great–i have identical twin girls–but they are 21 yrs old now and both of them got married a month apart last year—a week before thanksgiving and a week before Christmas—and I am still here to talk about it!!
We also have boy/girl twin grandbabies 2 years old.
November 13, 2012 at 5:33 pm #71195AnonymousInactiveOh geez only 4 hours? Your daughter must have had really severe reflux! That’s what my son was averaging when I thought his was out of control lol. Last night he slept from 9-8 with one feed in the middle. I’m hoping this is going to be the new norm.
Having twins is great. Though for a while I was feeling guilty that his poor sis was getting jipped with all the attention he got due to his reflux. If I wasn’t holding him and standing he would scream his little head off. Luckily she’s pretty laid back. Things are now getting back to where we can have an eat, activity and nap schedule so everyone’s happy and entertained.
I cannot believe your twins got married a month apart! That’s insane! I’m surprised you still have money to afford internet access lol. Was it something they both planned together or was one just totally upstaged? You poor thing!
November 13, 2012 at 7:54 pm #71198AnonymousInactivewe were holding my daughter almost 24 hours a day for about 2 months. She was on oxygen for the first month—so I was basically stuck in the corner of the family room for a month. I held her in my “day”chair and rocked her. I would put her in her swing when i had to go to the bathroom—and she would be screaming by the time I got back. I switched to a different recliner at night and slept with her on my chest. She was my 9th, and some of the others had been a little fusssy–so at first we just thought we had another fussy baby—but she got worse and wasn’t gaining weight very well. I had no idea how bad her reflux really was until she had a ph probe and a scope—-she had to have a fundo just before she turned 10 months.
My 13 year old had a twin that reabsorbed–but we did not know until delivery—there was a little fluid sac left in a pouch that was attached to the placenta—-weird.
My twins got engaged two weeks apart–but the second one to get engaged put her wedding date before her sister’s wedding. I was NOT happy about it. I have some health problems and don’t have alot of energy and I live on pain killers—not to mention it was the holidays. I tried to talk the second twin into waiting until after the holidays—when she would be on break from school and could work a little to help pay for things—this is actually what she wanted to do, but she was persuaded by an anxious fiance to get married sooner. I kind of felt like she was stealing her sister’s thunder.
I managed to talk them in to doing a double reception, and they both agreed as long as some compromises were made.
One of the mother-in-laws helped alot. She bought my daughter’s wedding dress and the flowers and they did a small reception in the town where the kids were going to school.
The other twin married in to money–and they did quite a big wedding dinner–that was almost like a reception.
We told the girls that we only had a budget of $1000 for each of them (I don’t think we really had that much money) We could do a nicer reception by combining the money and they each had separate mini-reception wedding dinners that were their very own.
I was really disappointed that for some reason, no one got any pictures of Kevin and I together with both of our brides at the reception.
I went through periods of being upset and then alright and then upset, etc., during the whole time. I actually had some negative feelings towards one of the son-in-laws before I had really met him because of all the hassle–but when I got to know him better, he is so friendly and open you just can’t help but like him.
They both married well–and I actually felt a little better and was able to take less pain medication during that month–stress and all!!
I know that was way more info than you really wanted–but I thought I’d give you a taste of what you can look forward to when you get older!!!
In the meantime—enjoy every minute of your twins–the reflux will be a distant memory before you realize it.
