Currently my son is in 7.5mg of Prevacid once daily. He’s almost 6 weeks and about 11lbs.
I had read somewhere that maybe I should be splitting his dosage and giving it to him 2x per day, vs. just the one. The dr. said it wasn’t necessary, but the dr. also didn’t know anything bout the 30 min. rule.
What’s the benefit of doing it 2x vs one time daily? I would assume a more constant flow of medicine in their system, right? My only fer is that if I split the dosage it won’t be high enough at either time, and he’ll just be miserable constantly.
Any thoughts/tips/suggestions?

I would check dose (there’s a link from Prevacid 101, the link is provided below, it’s called ‘Marci-Kids Dosing Chart’) & about properly administering the PPI.Please read:Prevacid 101:scroll to the last page of this post, (it’s actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)

August 13, 2012 at 8:09 am #70754AnonymousInactiveThanks Laura. I must Amit, I’ve read this dosing info, and I’m still very confused by it. Are you saying in your response he should be on the same size dose (7.5mg) 2 times a day? Sorry to be dumb.
August 13, 2012 at 8:15 am #70756hellbenntKeymasteryou’re not being dumb! I’ve ‘only’ been at this for nine years, lol!
how much does baby weigh?how old is baby?I’ll help you calculate…I CANNOT TELL you what to doYOU must decide if you will increase dose on your own. If you do (increase dose on your own), you will NOT be the first to do so!August 13, 2012 at 8:19 am #70757AnonymousInactiveHe’s 6 weeks and weighs 11lbs.
I appreciate the guidance, his dose has seemed rather low to me from the get go.
August 13, 2012 at 8:31 am #70758hellbenntKeymaster(please excuse odd bolding, etc – tried to copy & paste)Link to convert pounds to kilos:Ok, so 11lbs = 5 kilos(the site is down; here is complete site, saved:http://web.archive.org/web/20110427014830/http://marci-kids.com/)
So, for a baby less than 3 months old, the dosing of prevacid is1.5 to 1.75 mg/kg three times per dayI’ll calculate at highest, 1.75so I take weight of 5 kilos and multiply by 1.75 =8.75that’s 3 doses of 8.75 mgs a daythat’s 26.25 mgs total for the day…then you have to worry about ‘form’ – how it gets administeredin order to not have to worry about timing around meals, you can buy these products and give the meds as a liquidI would (but I can’t tell you to do this!) start at the highest dose, that I calculated, and you can always back down! -
