InactiveChloe is miserable and I know it is because her prevacid isn’t enough. I want to try a larger dose and just got some OTC prevacid. What can I mix it with? I have cereal and applesauce. How do I need to do it? She is almost 5 months and 17 lbs. She is currently on 7.5 mg 2x a day.

InactiveI would try the applesauce. Here’s a link to the Marci Kids website where you can check dosage and instructions for administration.

KeymasterI can’t just tell you what to do…I mean I can
, but you are the mama and you need to research, and not just take my word on this- I do know my stuff, but I am not a medical professional…Here is prevacid 101, which should explain everything:
scroll to the last page of this post, (it’s actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1From Prevacid 101:Here’s a handy chart to convert lbs to kilos:17lbs = 7.7 kgsFrom Marci-kids:3-6 months
1.25 to 1.5 mg/kg three times per day
Ok so calculating the higher dose:1.5 x 7.7 = 11.55mgs of prevacid three times a day11.55 x 3 = 34.65mgs of prevacidso I think the OTC capsules are 15mgsyou could start w/ opening up two of them and dividing the beads into three piles (this would get you to 30mgs in the day- it’s a start?)you open the capsule up somehow then you spill out the beads and split them into three groups/piles/dosestake one pile/group/dose of beads & give to baby on an empty stomach
administer the beads by sprinkling on top of a 1/2 tsp of apple sauce
(wash down w/ 1ml syringe full of water, as needed, or take the top/nipple off a bottle and put a little water in it and let baby suck on the nipple to get the water, or get a medicine pacifier and fill w/ some water and let baby suck it)
follow the dose of prevacid with a ‘meal’ 30 minutes after giving it (the prevacid)hellbennt2011-06-12 10:31:22

InactiveThanks! I read all the posts a while ago, but held off on doing it until now. This was a great refresher. Is is okay to use her 15 mg solutabs and the OTC stuff interchangeably? I thought about doing those am and pm like I have been, but adding an extra dose of the OTC stuff. Doses need to be 8 hours apart, right? If this works and I finally get the dosing right, is it worth it to get the bufferbabies? If so, how do I go about getting it? Thanks so much for your help! We ended up in the hospital for three days this week, but things are NOT any better and our doctors have done all they will do.

Keymasteryou can use both forms of prevacid.
both the solutabs and the capsules need to be given on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes laterbufferbabies is great bcse you can give at any time and don’t have to time around meals at allyou can play w/ the doses- try 3 even/equal doses, try ‘uneven’ doses, w/ ‘higher’ dose in the evening (if sleep is an issue), etc.or try two doses….for bufferbabies, call the office: (573) 884-0672if you have any zantac, you can give that, too, just make sure to space it 4hrs from the prevacidor, if you don’t have zantac, you can get OTC pepcid ac chewables- you dissolve 1/2 of one w/ some water and give it to baby – again, space 4hrs from prevacidwhere are you? have you looked atLooking for GI: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=660
to see if there are recommendations for ped GIs in your area?
Also, people have found good luck w/ General Practitioners…sometimes they’ll ‘take on’ a baby & be open to marci-kids, etc…Have you contacted Dr Philips?email dr philips Dr. Philips: phillipsjo@health.missouri.edu
and/or call the office: (573) 884-0672

InactiveThanks! I have looked at the forums and haven’t seen a GI in our area that we haven’t already seen. I am in western NC. We’re trying to give an extra dose of OTC prevacid in applesauce, but she is having a hard time taking it. I called her GI today and asked to try a different med or at least increase her dosing of the solutabs, and he wanted to try periactin first. I am not sure why though. She wants to eat, but it hurts to do so. How is an appetite stimulant going to help that? I already have to “cut her off” so to speak at 4 ounces and last week when we were in the hospital he said to make sure I am not overfeeding her. I am going to email Dr. Phillips and see what he has to say. I also plan on ordering Buffer Babies or Caracream… which would be best? I read about reactions to the sodium bicarb in BB, so was thinking Caracream may be best for us. Thanks for all your help! I am just so frustrated. This is tearing our whole family apart because poor Chloe is just so miserable.

Keymastersorry this is so hard! I’d say to just keep trying the applesauce until you get an answer from dr philips- put it on your finger w/ the beads if you have to & get it into her mouth & then wash it down w/ a syringe of water- the skinny 1ml syringes always worked best for us bcse we’d slide in alongside the inside of baby’s cheek

InactiveThanks for all your help! I will try that route. How in depth do I need to go with Dr. Phillips? I know he is busy, but I want to give enough info!

InactiveHeard back from Dr. P this morning and he said he knew of a great doctor in Charlotte and he would even be willing to work with Chloe. I am waiting on him to send me the contact info so I can see if insurance will cover it!
