After Aidan ate his bottle earlier this evening (about 6PM EST) he threw up the entire bottle all over me from my chest to my lap. Aidan gagged and then coughed then seemed OK but about 10 seconds after he was breathing and swallowing OK up it came.
He seemed a tad bit irritable before the feed but it was his “fussy time” so I dont know whether or not to contribute the vomiting to the reflux or to a stomach bug. Should I try to feed him another thickened feed for his next feeding or should I treat this as a vomiting and offer an electrolyte solution?
It should also be noted that I was advised to try gripe water with him for his gasiness and his hiccuping and he had one dose earlier today (about 1PM EST)…….this wouldnt effect a feed 5 hours after he got the gripe water would it?

One of the main ingredients in gripe water is sodium bicarbonate
(baking soda), which is a natural antacid. Unfortunately, on its own
sodium bicarb is not a very good antacid, which is why it is not sold
as such. The reason for this is that, while it very effectively
neutralizes stomach acid, it also activates or “turns on” the acid
producing proton pumps in the stomach lining, causing them to produce
even more acid. Magnesium hydroxide and calcium carbonate are more
often used as antacids because they neutralize acid without turning on
the proton pumps. When combined with a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) such as lansoprazole
or omeprazole, sodium bicarbonate actually enhances the action of these
drugs. In order for a PPI to inhibit or “block” proton pumps, the pumps
must be in an active state. So when a PPI is combined with sodium
bicarbonate, the bicarb neutralizes the acid, protecting the drug from
degradation in the acid, and turns on the proton pumps, which are then
blocked by the PPI. Zegerid is an FDA approved form of such a
combination. It contains omeprazole, sodium bicarbonate, and a
peach/mint flavoring.Because gripe water contains sodium bicarbonate, which can actually
cause more acid to be produced, it often provides temporary relief from
the symptoms of reflux, but then causes it to come back even worse than
before. For these reasons, I do not recommend the use of gripe water. But if it works for you and your child, that is great.October 16, 2006 at 8:20 pm #15841AnonymousInactiveAidan is on the Prilosec with the sodium bicarbonate compound and this has helped him tremendously……His pedi assured me that the gripe water wouldnt aggravate his reflux!!!! OMG….I could have caused this by listening to him!!! I am livid!!!!
Thanks for the info…the gripe water is in the trash can!

But sometimes it was a huge, projectile puke that literally splattered walls and covered me. My guess is that it’s probably just his reflux, so I’d continue to feed him as usual unless you see that he can’t keep anything down or begins to have diarrhea as well.

October 16, 2006 at 8:24 pm #15845AnonymousInactiveThat was how Aidan’s vomiting episode was…..It was on me, the couch, in the grooves of the couch and splattered on the wall but we never had this before. Thats what freaked me out.
I will try feeding him normally for his bedtime feed. Hopefully with that vomiting episode, he got all of that gripe water out of his system too!!!
Ive already paged his pedi to let his ass have it!!!

I’m sorry with what you are going through. I clearly don’t know as much as the other Mom’s on here but I just wanted to send you a

I freaked out and woke my husband up (this was 7am on a Saturday!) Sarah acted fine about it and it didn’t seem to even bother her…but it freaked me out! She has been fine ever since…but I am making sure to burp her obsessively b/c I’m scared of it happening again. Sorry I don’t have an answer…just wanted to share that we just went through that!
I feel for ALL mommies who deal with projectile spit up all day long!!! I never realized!

He slept pretty much through the night as well, was OK this AM during his bath and first feed. BUT, about an hour after his first feed he seemed to be acting the way he was prior to getting the reflux under control with the Prilosec suspension. The suspension we are using was formulated only a few days ago so I dont think it has anything to do with it losing its potency. My guess is he needs a dosage change again or a medication change. Right now he is sleeping after spending most of the afternoon crying.
Another issue, he did have some changes in his bowel movements in the last week or so as well. Green runny and VERY smelly. (not meaning to be gross) Can this be contributed to the medications? To a comorbid problem with the reflux? Or just to a tummy bug?
I am going to take him to the pediatrician to get checked out to see if he has a virus thing going on. Yep, the jackass that recommended the gripe water. But only because he respects my right to not vaccinate my children for medical and religious reasons. This was a very hard thing to find in my area.
If all seems well with the visit, its off to the GI again I think. A phone call too beforehand to see if an increase in medication may help. He is on the minimum 3.5 ml 3xs per day of the 2mg/ml Prilosec/Sodium Bicarbonate suspension. (or 21mg per day)
Thanks for the advice and the hugs, they are much needed right now as I am only a week post-op from a hardware removal surgery in my left leg/knee and my pain and Aidan;s pain have made the last 2 days unbearable!!!!!
October 17, 2006 at 8:41 pm #15922AnonymousInactiveOh, my….you must be miserable. I hope tomorrow is a better day for you and Aidan.
It does sound like a possible stomach virus. The foul smell is often a sign of rotavirus or other stomach bugs.
Hang in there, and good luck with his appointment.
