InactiveI have a 5 month old refluxer who LOVES her pacifier! She needs it to fall asleep. Without it, she cries and cries. I am beginning to wonder if now is a good time to wean her from it. After reading the “cry it out” forum posted right before this one, I got some great advice. I am just worried that the reflux could worsen from all the crying, just as we’ve got it somewhat under control. Any suggestions out there?? Should we wait awhile or go for it?? Whadda think??

InactiveI personally would wait until the reflux is completely under control
before you take the pacifier away. She is only 5 months so I
wouldn’t worry about it. Zach had his pacifier until just a
couple of months ago. When he was 8 months we started giving it
to him only during naps and bedtime so breaking him from the habit
wasn’t that tough. Good luck!September 27, 2006 at 7:15 pm #14471Anonymous
InactiveI’m the last person to give advice on this. My oldest slept with a nuk until she was 2 1/2!
Myles is 12 months and I just can’t bring myself to take it away from him because he does find it so soothing at bedtime.Does she wake up continaully at night looking for it? My first did that and it really was a problem for a while. But Myles uses it to fall asleep and then he sleeps almost the whole night without it. I sneak in and take it out of his mouth once he is asleep. I read somewhere that taking it once they fall asleep helps them get used to not sleeping with it in their mouth all night, so then they don’t wake up and cry if it falls out. I don’t know if this works for most babies but it seems to work well for Myles. Usually he only cries for it once in the wee hours of the morning.

Inactivehonestly you are lucky you have a baby that will take a pacifier.my son hates it. i would like him to take it sometimes to soothe himself, but he wont. my grandma yells at me saying “he needs his binky”.he wont take it though, ever.
sometimes he cries so hard and i just wish he would take it.September 27, 2006 at 7:52 pm #14473Anonymous
Inactivesylvia turns 3 next week………..and we just took the “papoo” away last week. how’s that for having a pacifier for a long time!!?? all of my other kids gave them up before a year—-they’d be spitting it out and i’d be sticking back in their mouth. i had to work with several of my children to get them to take a pacifier and i never could get two of them to take them as babies. i’m all for pacifers—–but i sure hate to see 3 year olds walking around with them in their mouths. LOL!!!!!

Inactiveaww don’t worry let her keep the paci for a while! My nephew gave his up at 2 when my sister used this technique, the “paci fairy” (my mom used the “bottle fairy” with her when she was little), put all the paci’s in a basket, hang it on a tree outside (or whatever) and in the morning the “paci fairy” will have come and given her a toy in place of the paci’s, sometimes it has to be one paci at a time, my nephew tossed all his in, and got a stuffed cow…..which imeaditly became his lovey!!!

InactiveSame here. Carter had his until he was s little over 2 years old. The “paci fairy” was the one who took his and left him a big truck to push around the house. I wrapped it up and stuck it in this bed that night as I took the paci away from him and threw it in the trash. Of course, we talked about the “paci fairy” all day and I explained to him that the new babies being born had to have one and that it was time for him to give it up. Worked like a charm. He had to have his paci 24/7 and I am surprised that he even learned how to talk
. Marshall is now 9 months old and only wants his to sleep with. I guess that is a good sign.September 27, 2006 at 9:51 pm #14487Anonymous
InactiveMy nephew was 4 before they got rid of it! He was just so attached. (And he turned out fine.)

InactiveKaelyn still uses hers at bedtime and for naps (although day care doesn’t allow them, so she doesn’t have it there). I don’t let her have it when she’s not in bed. She’s not a great sleeper, so I’m really not in a hurry to take it away from her. Alexandra hasn’t shown any interest in a paci, but she did find her thumb this week and she’s become a huge fan of thumb sucking in just a couple of days.

Inactiveok– thanks for the support. i suppose i just wanted someone to tell me it’s okay to keep it past the “necessary” time. she only needs it on bad reflux days, naps, and bedtime. so, i won’t worry about it for awhile. by the way, i love the idea of the “pacifier fairy”!!

InactiveYeah, I do too. I was a mean mommy when I took Liza’s away. I just cut the tip off of it and told her it was broken.
Poor kid. She cried a little but did she fine. I gave her a lovey to sleep with and she got over it pretty quikly, but she should have at least gotten a little present from the “pacifier fairy” for being such a trooper. Now I know a better way to do it when the time comes for Myles to give up his.

InactiveSeth is 21 months and still has a pacifier. I heard it helps the reflux (sucking motion helps keep the acid down?) so I figured he can have it as long as he has the reflux although I am thinking of limiting it to nap and bed time once he turns two. I definitely would not worry about trying to get rid of it at 5 months!

InactiveMatthew still uses the paci – usually only wants it for naps and sleep but other times he sees it and puts it in his mouth. I have no intention of taking it away from him anytime soon.

Keymaster
ok I’ll admit it. Jonah still has his Dewey* (explanation to follow
). Only for sleeping in his bed. We were going to get rid of it, but then Ari was coming along & we didn’t want to upset him what with the new baby & everything
…he now only wants his yellow Dewey, so I’m planning on just riding this one out until it wears out or gets lost…I’d like to make it get lost, but I can’t bring myself to do it…dh can’t either…I do try & talk about him giving it up…I read on TBW about telling him how it is getting too small for him, rather than he’s getting too big for it- I’m pretty into semantics, so that’s what I keep telling him…we’re going away this week and I suggested to dh that we just ‘forget’ to bring it on the trip, but we’re chickens
& don’t want to make traveling (a long day of flying w/ a stop over) even worse…so then I thought maybe when we get home we say we forgot it…yikes…*before Jonah was even talking, I’d say at 11 or 12 months old, he named his pacifier Dewey. We had absolutely no part in it! In fact, we were careful to not refer to it as anything, hoping not to draw attention to it! no Paci, no binky, no nothing! HA! He showed us!

InactiveLaura, he’s probably the only kid on the planet who calls his pacifier “Dewey”!!

How about the pacifier fairy like the other’s mentioned?
Or you could break it like I broke Liza’s. She didn’t know we had other’s stashed in hideaway places and that you could buy more at the store, so when she saw her’s was broken she knew her nuk days were over. She took it MUCH better than I thought she would. I asked her if her favorite stuffed animal (a puppy she called “pup-pup”) would help her feel better and she said tearfully, “Yes, mommy.” She hugged that little puppy all night long for a few days, but soon forgot all about her nuk.
