InactiveDs had a bad tummy virus about a week ago. He was vomitting a lot (quantity) and very frequently. After about an hour and a half… after he would throw up he would become very lethargic and eyes rolled back in his head. He turned very pale and his lips turned blue.
We ended up taking him to the er and the kept him over the weekend for testing to make sure he didn’t have a seizure.
All the tests came back normal. What I am wondering is did he just pass out from being dehydrated or electrolytes imbalance, or is it something related to his reflux?
Ds is 9 months old, eating stage 2 jar foods and thickened formula. Also on prevacid that was just increased to 15mg twice a day.
Thanks

InactiveIt is possible for a child to have a seizure, and for tests to come back normal. Just wondering what tests they did and how soon after the event? My daughter has epilepsy and has had all normal tests, despite having clear seizures. I’m not saying that to scare you, just to be aware… I didn’t know that prior to the diagnosis. I thought normal EEG= no epilepsy. Dehydration, tummy bugs, can cause seizures in children. Typically when you “pass out”, eyes don’t roll back and you don’t turn blue. Did he have a fever at the time of the event. I would guess that if it was due to a tummy bug, it wasn’t likely related to his reflux. Also, typically sandifer’s is related to a stiffening posture, not a lethargic passing out. If it doesn’t happen again, then I would try not to worry about it. Sometimes those things happen in babies/children, and if it happens once, they don’t worry about it. If it happens more than once, then it’s more of an issue. Hope he’s feeling better. s&h’s mum2010-02-03 21:28:48

InactiveHe had no fever. They did a ct-scan, blood work, chest x-ray and then eeg. Everything came back normal. The neurologist said that if he had a seizure that it would have showed up on the eeg so he felt there was no need to do the mri.
They did all these tests within 24-48 hours after his episode, so I am pretty confident about the results. We go for a follow up with the pedi tomorrow. I hope it was just a fluke thing and won’t happen again. Scared us to death!

InactiveSo we went to the pediatrician this morning and he thinks that his seizure-like episode was related to his reflux, but of course triggered by the virus. He thinks that maybe he was either choking or some vomit might have gone down the wrong pipe and constricted his airway and that could have turned his lips blue.
The pediatrician is not comfortable on the higher dose of the prevacid, so he is taking him back down to the 7.5mg twice a day and then adding Zantac at lunch time on top of the prevacid. This is so frustrating because he was doing so well and we were just talking about weening him off of the prevacid. I feel like we are starting all over again with this.marylynn2010-02-04 11:09:46

InactiveGlad that the ped thinks it was nothing, good news! But sorry that he’s cutting back the prevacid. Very frustrating. How much prevacid is he on? Not sure if this is okay, but I hear that prevacid capsules are now OTC in the US? Hang in there!

InactiveWe were on 7.5mg twice a day…. The doctor in the hospital increased his dose to 15mg twice a day, but the pedi wants to go back to what we were on before.
I am not so worried about the dosage of the meds, but he has not been sleeping well lately and has been more fussy than usual. It seems like we are going backwards when it took us so long to get him to this point. =(You are right about the prevacide being otc. I need to really look into that b/c it is sooooooo expensive to by the solutabs via prescription. If I can figure out a way to give him the otc version then we would be so much better off.February 4, 2010 at 4:00 pm #65743Anonymous
InactiveI don’t know that the OTC is cheap either. You can give capsules in a spoon of applesauce, or by ordering buffer babies from marci-kids.

InactiveYou can also mix the capsules with 4 oz or less, of apple juice.

InactiveMy daughter will be six years old this year and she has done this ever sense she was about 16months old. EVERY single time she vomits she passes out! It is scary and no one knows why and this bothers me. Today she didn’t tell me she was gonna go and fell backwards and hit her head. You have to watch him closely know! Good luck I hope you find answers, I sure wish I had some!

InactiveVasa-vagel response, it what it is called. Has something to do with low blood pressure and/or heart condition. Went to the ped. today and we have a appointment with the pediatric cardiologist.

InactiveI would also follow up with a neurologist if you haven’t done so already. That sounds very scary! Good luck.
