InactiveMy newborn daughter after a week of increasing pain is now starting to arch and pull back from feedings. She’s also very uncomfortable about an hour afterwards. Since I can’t get in with my GI for a week (and my Ped is useless on reflux issues), I’d like to get her some relief since we’re already struggling with breastfeeding and don’t want her to stop altogether-or worse, develop a feeding averson like my son did. Mylanta Cherry supreme isn’t helping and I see many of you use pepcid with success…anyone know if it’s ok for a 1 month old (10 pounds)? What is the dose? Should I call my GI first?
Also, is there a prescription Pepcid for kids like the baby Zantac? Is that somehting that’s compounded? Would I have to be concerned about that (as you do with ppi’s)?
THANK YOU!

Keymasterhey tracy,
I posted a link for you in your other post
I would email dr philips about the dose for pepsid complete for a newborn- it’s half a tablet for a 6 month old- maybe try a quarter of a tablet dissolved in some water…there is pepsid in liquid form, there’s also axid and tagament- all the same ‘kind’ of drug as zantac- you don’t have to worry about compounding- it’s not like w/ a PPI…they all are pretty weight sensitive, so I would find out the maximum dose by weight and increase it at every little weight gain-hang in there!!it must be so HARD for you…yikes

InactiveThanks Laura. As always I appreciate your support.
Yes, it’s so stressful right now! We’re still not 100% it’s reflux but I think that’s just wishful thinking. She’s still not really pooping and we finally used babylax and got an ocean of it out, but still fussing and now stopping during eating and crying. Came out of nowhere and I’m still doing elimination diet-crazy! I just hope it’s not worse than Ian’s because I can’t imagine doing the feeding clinic thing with a toddler to run around after. They don’t start for awhile though, right?Oh, last question-do you have to wait prior to a meal to give pepsid? On an empty stomach?Hope you’re little men are doing well!! Congrats on no reflux!!September 3, 2007 at 6:24 pm #42124hellbennt
KeymasterYou don’t have to wait with pepsid, ask your pharmacist but I really don’t think you have to wait- it doesn’t work the same way as a PPI…
OT (off topic):there’s a yahoo group, I still read the posts (digest comes to my inbox, lol), that might help- it’s http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/breastfeedingreflux/& I posted the link for a breastfeeding a food allergy/intolerant baby- it’s over at your initial post…have you called La leche league? hmm…we can discuss this back there so as to stay on topic

Inactiveyou dont have to wait with pepsid or time it in anyway.. just 4 hrs from a ppi. but how are you going to get it? we needed a prescription from our ped. for it.. and than they would make the suspension for us. so.. in the meantime i would try the pepcid complete if dr. phillips says its alright…i cant see why not..but just to make sure i would ask him…and keep the mylanta up in the meantime as well.. just to cut down any possible pain/damage that could be happening.

InactiveThanks guys-I will email him. Does anyone have his address? I’m also going to call pediatric gi and see if they’ll get me a prescription at least for pepsid until she can see me next week. I don’t know if she’ll do that seeing she hasn’t met Lauren yet but I’ll try.
Laura, thanks for the forums. I’ll respond on my other post later (my mother just got here from Mass) but I have to say I really think Lauren’s problems with breastfeeding are more with sucking. She wasn’t doing that before any of this reflux stuff showed it’s head. Reflux kind of coordinated with the pooping stopping last week. Not to say, that my diet isn’t involved I’m sure. But really I can’t eliminate anything else and keep this up-it’s way too draining on energy.
