Pepcid Complete – how to take?

My son keeps waking up at 3 a.m. and screaming in pain – he’s not hungry, won’t eat (or has usually just eaten an hour before, actually). I have some Pepcid Complete that I purchased a few weeks ago “just in case”. This seems like a good “just in case” situation! But I don’t know how to give it to him. He’ll be 16 weeks on Monday and exclusively breastfeeds. Do I mix it with X amount of water and administer it with a syringe? If so, how much water? I’ve tried Mylanta with him, but his belly doesn’t tolerate it very well.

Any info./advice would be welcome! By the way, I’m already giving him more of his Prilosec dose than the doctor prescribed (they are very conservative with it, but have given me permission to increase as necessary based on his symptoms). I’m just trying to get us to his 4-month check up when I’ll discuss that he really seems to be “outgrowing” his dose.

I did a search and everything says take 1/2 a tablet & dissolve in a teaspoon of water

the instructions are for babies 6months & up weighing 15lbs I’d say

you can email dr philips & ask phillipsjo@health.missouri.edu, but I bet he’d say the prilosec dose needs to be increased?

not sure of your current dose…

Thanks – I’m fairly certain his dose isn’t correct. I would think it’s being compounded correctly because it’s been working fine up until a week or so ago, and gradually he’s just gotten worse. He gains weight like a madman – he was 15 lbs. at 3 months, so I’m sure he’s up to 16 by now. I think he’s so big because of the amount he wakes up during the night to eat (probably to cope with the reflux). Anyway, do you suppose the “6 months and up” has to do with weight? If he’s already there, would it hurt to try it? I know you probably don’t have an answer for that. I did email Dr. Philips a month or so ago about this exact topic and never got an answer (that’s why the Pepcid’s been sitting in the closet this whole time 🙂

Anyway, thanks for the input. Not sure what I’ll do, other than call the doctor tomorrow to get approved for the increased dosage that I’m already giving him 🙂

well to be conservative you could try 1/4 of a tablet dissolved in some water…

It’s very typical for Prilosec to work for a while and then stop working when it’s not being compounded properly. It’s fine when you first take it home from the pharmacy but as time goes by the medication degrades and loses it’s effectiveness right in the bottle. That’s why it’s so important that it is made correctly.
