Hey everybody,
I am puzzled about something that happened with my 2-year-old son yesterday. First, a little background — on last Tuesday he started vomiting, which lasted about 24 hours, then on Thursday he was really lethargic and had a low-grade fever. By the weekend, he had no more fever and seemed to feel much better, still just a little more easily tired and low appetite, but improving. Anyway, yesterday morning at church around 11:00, someone gave my son a peppermint. Baron put it in his mouth and sucked on it for probably 20 minutes before spitting it out.
After church and lunch, he went down for his nap and then woke up much earlier than usual around 2:00 pm, pulling off his socks and scratching his feet. I undressed him and found bright red splotchy areas (maybe a little raised) on his upper arms and all over his feet (the top and the soles). They were itching like crazy, and he was miserable. I could see no other symptoms, like in his mouth (but he really didn’t cooperate when I tried to look). But then all of a sudden, it was over, and the red areas started to disappear. By 4:00 or so, I couldn’t find even the slightest red spot.
So, I am puzzled because I don’t know if this was some kind of rash associated with the virus he’s had? If so, I would’ve thought it would’ve lasted longer? Or could it be a reaction from the peppermint? It may have been hives, but I don’t really know what that looks like exactly. The weird thing is that this was not the first time he’d ever tried a peppermint. Well, I have given him a peppermint Altoid a couple of times in the past when he begged me for it, but he would just put it in his mouth for a second then spit it out quickly, probably because it was so strong.
Any input? What kind of rash would come and go so quickly? Oh, and I don’t know if this is relevant or not, but my FIL is allergic to spearmint.
Thanks in advance.
