My daughter has sandifers syndrome. I reviewed this forum and went to Marci-Kids website and asked for her to be put on prevacid. She still has severe episodes of reflux in the car. Appointment not until April 7 with GI. I called my ped and asked about the chocobase. Ped’s nurse tried to call it in to the local pharmacist. They didn’t even know what it was. The nurse tried a small mom and pop pharmacy. They knew what it was but are not able to order it and don’t have any. I asked the nurse if my ped had ever prescribed it before she said no, but it’s okay.
What is this stuff and why don’t pharmacies have it? I am nervous about using it now if they do locate some.

InactiveWelcome to the site! I’m guessing that Joel (Reflux Sol) will reply and give you a more complete answer, but if I’m remembering correctly, it has something to do with patents and copyrights. Chocobase and caracream were removed from the market when Zegerid was introduced. I think it was part of a deal with the manufacturer (or something like that). In any case, they are no longer available in the United States.

Keymasterhi & welcome!!
if you’re out of the USA you can get caracream/chocobase & it is LIQUID GOLD!!! We LOVe the stuff here, not to worry
!Long story about why it’s only available out of the country(you’ll read about it from the link I’ll give you below), but what IS available is Zegerid– same company- different flavor- made with the drug that’s prilosec (caracream/chocobase was with prilosec, prevacid & I think even nexium)…if you can’t get THAT, then the next best thing is to get your PPI compounded by the pharmacy, but you have to SPECIFY HOW you want it compounded…from here https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853&am p;PN=1&TPN=1 you will learn ALL about these things & MORE
– look for the link ‘PREVACID 101’ and from there there’s a link to the proper doses of PPIs & how to ask for them to be compounded…so glad you found us!

InactiveWow! Thank you both for telling me that. I truly was at a loss. Laura I have started going through all of your links. It is good info. My baby takes 3ml of prevacid twich a day. I don’t think it’s enough. I am going to take some time and figure out what she needs to have. why aren’t the ped’s and gi’s better at helping with this situation when there are so many babies affected by it.
I thought my baby was having seizures when I saw the first sandifer episode and we spent two nights at Children’s medical getting eeg’s and everything.
Not to mention I had taken her to the ped about 2 hours before going to the hospital via ambulance. He said the unusual head movement was probably just something she picked up. But when I got home she had added the stretching and arching.
It doesn’t make sense that we pay them all of this money and have to self diagnose and figure out dosages.
I am just dissappointed! But this forum is great! It has eased so much tension for me.

InactiveJust so you know, my son had sandifer’s syndrome also. He HATED the tast of Choco Base, plus it STAINS dark brown spots on anything it came in contact with. It wasn’t a great product for us. I used the Prevacid powder packets that you mix with water and fed it to him with a spoon starting at 3 weeks old. He hated the syringes. But, that Zegrid may be a good option too, I don’t know much about it.
