InactiveI am so sorry to sound desperate, but I am. I have posted a lot of questions in the past few days and everyone has been so helpful. But things have gone from bad to worse.
Until today, my son (3 mo, 13.4 lbs) was on 2.5ml of Prilosec 2xday (am & bedtime.) He had been on the bedtime dose for 3 weeks and we jsut added the am dose 1 week ago. On Monday I added 2 1ML doses of Zantac, the first 4 hours after the prilosec, the second 4 hours after that, then the bedtime prilosec 4 hours after that. He had gone from sleeping anywhere from 4-6 hours at night to not at all unless I am holding him for the past 3 nights. We were at the dr on Monday and today I started previcid 15 mg solutabs, at a 7.5 mg dose once in the am. I followed up with 1.5 ml Zantac 4 hours later, with another 1.5 ml of Zantac 4 hours after the first. I also switched from regular mylanta to CVS brand Cherry supreme. I have eliminated all soy in addition to dairy since Monday in case that was an issue. ALl I have had for the past 3 days is water, turkey, sweet potatoes, white potatoes, rice milk, rice chex, and rice cakes. My problem now is that he has been spitting up A LOT more since yesterday late afternoon and seems much more uncomfortable- very stiff and fussy. Antime I try to sit him down, hets very stiff and screams. Also just had a poopy diaper that had 2 tiny orange dots- blood? He has been spitting up with every feed, which he never has before. Is it too much medication? I know I am in for another sleepless night but I am not sure how much more of this uncertainty I can handle.Any ideas/help/suggestins would be appreciated!!!helpforshermie 2009-12-02 20:11:28 December 2, 2009 at 8:16 pm #64853hellbennt
Keymasterok I’m not sure if you need to focus on your diet just yet or not…but, since you’re three days into a limited diet you should/could keep going, making sure that none of the rice products have any ingredients in them as ‘hidden’ milk or soy product & that the turkey has no flavorings or anything else added…
now for the medication:
nothing stops spit up, the medication just addresses the pain.
sometimes babies actually do spit up more on medication bcse they are
feeling more comfortable and don’t ‘fight’ to keep it down…ok so your baby is ‘just’ on 7.5mgs per day of prevacid?
he is 3 months and weighs 13.4 lbs
according to http://www.marci-kids.com/dosing.html
dosing of prevacid should be:3-6 months
1.25 to 1.5 mg/kg three times per dayfrom this conversion chart:http://www.sfca.co.uk/match/kilolbs.htm
I see that 13.4lbs = 6 kilos
so first I will figure out the ‘low’ dose of prevacid:
1.25mgs per kilo given 3 x a day6 x 1.25 = 7.5
this means, on the LOW side of things, that your baby should be getting
7.5 mgs of prevacid THREE TIMES A DAY
if I’m reading your post correctly, your little guy is only getting this dose ONE TIME a day…now for the zantac:
maximum zantac by weight is 10mgs per kilo
baby is 6 kilos, so
6 x 10 = 60
your bottle says 15mgs/ml
so divide 60 by 15 to get 4mls total for the day of zantac
from your post, it seems as though you are giving this dose…if/when you increase the prevacid, it should be at most a day or two to see the effects of the increased medication, as it’s already in his system…you shouldn’t have to wait the full two weeks (unless the liquid you were giving was complete bunk)…

InactiveThank you Laura. I am so worried that he seems so much more uncomfortable today. As I type, he is fussing and rubbing his face against my shoulder. I am nervous that the
previcid solutabs are what is making him so uncomfortable. I feel like I should go back to the prilosec for now. Not sure if I can give him a dose tonight. It’s the worst thing in the world to see your baby in pain and not be able to stop it.December 2, 2009 at 8:27 pm #64856hellbennt
Keymasteris he only taking 7.5mgs a day of prevacid? if so, that is LESS that the liquid you were giving. the lesser dose could be it…
I don’t know if you can be so quick to say it’s the solutabs until he’s on a good dose?December 3, 2009 at 7:48 am #64861Anonymous
Inactivecould be the form of prevacid. many babies do amazing on the solutabs, but neither one of my boys could handle them. Extremely fussy on them and just so much worse. We were on a larger dose than that and also many babies really do very well on them, we just happen to be one of the unlucky ones that could not handle them. If you can associate the feeling worse with the start of prevacid, then it is either the prevacid or it is the fact that you stopped the prilosec and the prevacid hasn’t taken full effect yet, or the prevacid is too low. I would move through those three things one at a time to try to figure it out. If you up the dose of prevacid and he gets worse, then I think you know it is the prevacid and not the dose issue…… I would give it a bit more time though but Laura is right, the dose is low…..
