Brian (13 month) is more willingly taking solid (puree) now, but he does not want to drink formula (30cal/oz) except the moring and bed time 5oz bottle. I offer him formula in a cup (he does not want to drink from bottle either) with three solid meals, he hates it, so I need to use spoon to feed him 3-4oz of formula during the solid time, it is time consuming and he hates it too, I think he just hates milk over all, his nutritionist said he only need 16oz at his age, I offer 19-22oz per day, should I just offer him 16oz instead? What should I do? If I do not give him 19-22oz formula, he need to eat a lot a lot to make up those 3-6 oz 30cal/oz formula (he need 1000cal per day). If so, what more food can I offer to him?

I don’t anything about this but just wanted to offer you some sympathy! I am sorry that it is such a struggle to get him to drink formula. I know that has to be really hard on you!

Hopefully someone else will have some great advice for you!

Have you tried flavoring the formula? I’ve heard of some moms that add pureed fruit like pears or bananas to the formula to make it more appealing. You can also buy formula flavoring packets from the same company that makes Neocate formula. Since he’s over a year, have you tried whole milk yet? Or even something like Pedialite that still has lots of nutrients and probably taste better than formula.

I agree with you about being leary of dropping him down to 16 oz per day. Thats a lot of calories to try to make up with solids. We were told to do the same thing for Noah, but there is no way he will eat even nearly enough solids to make up for the calorie loss. We also give him 30 cal per oz of formula and we do whatever it takes to get 24 oz into him per day.

Sorry, I’m drawing a blank on what Brian is allowed and not allowed to eat (and on what he is willing to eat), so some (or many) of these ideas may not work for you. Around that age, Kaelyn dropped to two bottles a day (for a total of about 9 oz of nutramigen). She absolutely refused to drink formula out of anything except her bottle and she showed no interest in milk from a sippy cup. We just tried to give her lots of high calorie foods and make sure that she got her calcium and protein from other sources. She ate a lot of mac and cheese, yogurt, oatmeal with blackstrap molasses (an awesome source of iron and calcium), broccoli and pasta with tomato sauce. Now that she can’t have milk, we use soy yogurt, soy milk, rice pasta and soy cheese, but these are still some of the staples of her diet. Pasta is a great source of calories. So is soy yogurt. It was (and continues to be) a challenge to get calories into her when she is being really picky because many of her favorite foods (fruits and veggies) are fairly low calorie.

If you can get him to eat some of the higher calorie foods, then I wouldn’t try to force him to take in more than the 16 oz of formula that your doctor suggests. Good luck!

Also, Gina (trigirl) posted quite a while ago about “Bubba Bread”. She used it to sneak lots of fruits and veggies into Riley’s diet. I tried it twice. I thought that it was really good both times. Of course, it wasn’t supposed to be feeding me. The first time, Kaelyn was mildly interested, but not thrilled. The second time, I made sure that I cut all of the fruits and veggies really, really small, and I didn’t add as many (but I did add some pureed veggies, or maybe canned pumpkin — sorry, it was a while ago), and she ate a lot more of it.

Thank you every one!

Brian takes between 18-20oz of puree solid every day, I usually offer him 3 oz of oatmeal, 1/2 oz of chicken, 2oz of fruit or veggie, 1oz of yogurt, along with 3oz of formula in one sitting, does that sound too much for his age? He does not like cheese at all, he would eat yogurt but does not like it, and he vomited twice today after I fed him yogurt (I think he just hates the smell and taste), so I need to stop feeding him yogurt for at least one week. Is 16oz of formula enough for his age? If he only drinks 16 oz of formula, what else can I offer him to get all the nutrient he needs?

Please help!

Hailey also was down to 2 bottles a day at this age and she only had a total of about 8-12 oz of formula a day once that happened. So, I think 16 oz sounds like plenty. How about drinkable yogurts? Hailey won’t eat yogurt but will drink it. You can also just water down regular yogurt (with milk, formula or water) and put it in a cup. Have you tried shredded cheese?
