Post-nasal drip…reflux flaring!

Please help!

A couple of weeks back (maybe 3) we had wildfires in our area. Since then my entire family (including Landen) have had bad allergies (runny noses, etc) my 2.5 yr old even developed a bacterial sinus infection from his allergies getting so bad and is on his 2nd round of antibiotics! Landen STILL has post-nasal drip and it’s just getting worse. Every time I’ve called the ped they tell me he can only have saline drops. They are doing NOTHING. OK I understand, he IS only 3 months old (just shy of)…but my goodness, he is over 14lbs! Can’t he have SOMETHING to dry it up? This has been going on for weeks and today he is totally gagging on phlegm. It’s so sad. Any ideas?

From what I understand b/c of his age really and truely the saline drops are the only thing you can do. I guess if it were me, I would keep him up right as much as possible to help with drainage as well. Are you suctioning his nose or just using the drops and letting them go with gravity? If you aren’t suctioning, I might do that and see if that helps any at all. Cooper is always congested and we suction him and he hates it until we get something and then he is so happy. Good Luck.

My daughter had her first bacterial sinus infection at only 4 months of age. Do you think he has an actual infection? If so he may need antibiotics.

BTW…some docs will tell you that babies don’t actually have sinuses….that may be true but they can still get Upper Respiratory Infections and if these infections are bacterial an antibiotic would clear it up.

Myabe some vicks baby rub around the clock to clear out the nasal passages as well. Not sure but it might be worth a go.

Christine, I started to worry if he needed AB’s. We saw the ped today and it was MY old ped I saw as a child! Man, he is getting old! LOL. He was filling in for our usual ped. Anyway, no bacterial things going on, but he said Landen could have 1/2 tsp dimetapp cold & allergy or triaminic cold & allergy! I was like REALLY?!?! And he said “yeah, the kid is a porker!, it’s not going to hurt him” (he weighed 14 lbs, 13 oz today). He basically said age DOES matter unless it is REALLY affecting their sleep badly. He said he trusts those 2 drugs (and lets face it, this pedi is old ) and to try only dosing landen once during the day and once at night to dry him up a bit (but max would be every 6 hours if he were really bad). If he isn’t better in 5 days, call back.

The Vicks baby rub is a good idea too. I forgot about that stuff. I used to rub it on Kaden’s PJ’s (the top) when he was real bad.

That’s great. I hope the dimetapp helps. It never worked for my kids, but maybe because I usually only tried it for a day or two.

Yeah, I am sure it won’t help much (more of a placebo affect for mom ) I swear, I gave him a dose of Zantac before his noon feed and he seems less stuffy and now I’m wondering if it’s just that his reflux isn’t under control. You guys are probably all reminiscing about this now. I am sure you went through this roller coaster (virus? allergies? reflux not under control?) I know he SO needs 30mg of prevacid. 6/13 CANNOT get here fast enough. we see a new GI. I suspect now that this is the real problem b.c the zantac is helping him breathe better. Nothing like CHOKING on acid. Poor baby.

I’m so sorry he’s having a rough time! Hailey’s post nasal drip always leads to gagging and puking around here too. Our doc okayed benadryl even from when she was very young b/c I believe they give it to little ones as well. If you’re adventurous, you can try something homeopathic. It might not help, but likely won’t hurt either. We use metholatum, a natural brand on her chest, but it also says not for children under 2 for whatever reason. I’m sorry he’s having a hard time.

Carson gets post nasal drip – you can’t even tell unless the doc looks down his throat. We are on Singulair but havent noticed a difference – only been on 6 days. However, Dimetap cold/allergy works great for Carson right before bed. I have a printout from our doc and it also says he could have 1/2 teaspoon. I didn’t give it to him during the day as it makes him tired but I gave it before bed. Dimetap makes an infant decongestant that I gave him during the day when he was really stuffy.

Sorry you are having trouble with the air after the fires. Has to be horrible on everyone’s systems – especially the little ones.

I remember I asked the same thing when Brianna was little and was having horrible nasal drip. You are lucky, my ped was addiment about no meds or anything. My mom did buy this pedia care vapor plug in you might want to try. It is for babies 3 months and older, but since Landen is a “porker” according to your ped, I am sure it would be fine. Also, have you tried the cool mist humidifier? Not sure if it woud lwork in your situation, but anything is worth a try. Good luck!
