I think we are ready to enter the world of potty training! Sarah pooped and peed on the potty for the very first time on her birthday! She was at daycare. The sitter has been wonderful about taking her potty every hour. Sarah has only had 2 accidents all week in pull ups (except for nap and bed, which she’s still in a diaper). However, she isn’t initiating going to the potty herself yet. She’ll tell the sitter occasionally but I’ve found at home that she’ll only tell me AFTER she’s gone.
Some people have said that the only way she is going to learn to start initiating potty time herself is to put her in panties and let her FEEL the accidents. Messy way to learn, but I see the point. What did you do? Any advice? I’m NOT pressing the issue with Sarah. She is soooooooooooo excited about going and VERY proud of herself when she does. I guess I’m just afraid that if I try panties I’ll realize she’s not QUITE as ready as I thought she was. Not a good reason to quit…it just has me a little nervous. We have been giving her an M&M for every successful potty trip and Sarah loves her little “treat”. I just want her to start TELLING me when SHE has to go so I don’t have to watch the clock all weekend. Or is that just part of the training process? How long do I have to do the “every hour” thing?I’ll stop rambling now…just looking for advice on jumping into the pantie thing. Should I just go for it and see how she does?THANKS IN ADVANCE!May 3, 2008 at 6:51 am #51055AnonymousInactiveI think you could do one of two things….
1. do the underpants and let her “feel” it. Or they have those “feel and learn” pull ups that let her feel it but not get too dirty/wet etc….2. or (not as nice but worked with Dylan) was we made him go naked when home or with just a shirt. He didn’t want to go because he knew nothing was there to go “in” so he would go to the potty, or he woudl get ready to go, and we would notice the signs and bring him there right away.David was at home (teacher) and we trained over the summer, but for us was started with Dylan the summer after three, and not completely trained until 4. Took a while, but we got there!!!Good Luck! That’s great to not have to buy diapers anymore!Ann MarieMay 3, 2008 at 10:05 am #51056AnonymousInactiveAmy I agree with Ann Marie about using the pull ups. My mom is using those with one of her grandsons and so far it is working pretty good. Also I would think since you are a teacher as well that summer might be a good time to start 100% since you will be with her all the time. My SIL is a teacher and her daughter turned 2 the end of March and she is waiting until Summer to start so she can be around for consistency. Just a thought. I did know one mom whose little girl loved “silky” panties so if she had those on she would not mess them up… might try to find some that Sarah really likes and then maybe she will want to keep them clean… Good Luck. Potty training is going to be so fun I can only imagine.

After that became routine, I would start asking her is she wanted to go potty. I did this every hour or so. Sometimes she would say yes, others no. If she said no, I wouldn’t push it because I knew that this was one battle she could win. Once she started saying yes, I would just start asking her about the times I knew she would need to go.. not every hour anymore. We also did the M&M thing too, and that worked great. We never moved to big girl panties until she was very consistent with keeping her pull up dry during the day. I just wasn’t interested in cleaning up pee all over the place. She still wore a diaper at naps and bed for some time after this. Once she was dry consistently (and we would always praise her for keeping it dry), we used panties during the day and then moved to pull ups for naps and bedtime. And then when those were dry consistently, we moved to panties all the time. Actually, I bought the panties early on and used them as incentive for her to stay dry and go in the potty. She was very excited to get to wear the princess panties.I will say though, that she didn’t start telling me she had to go until she was much older. And, if I forgot to ask her or take her when she would normally need to go, that’s when she would have an accident… though those were rare.. maybe only 3 or 4 times.I still have to remind her to go even now, though she will finally go on her own, but only after dancing around and wriggling for awhile. I think she just doesn’t want to stop what she’s doing.Bensmama2008-05-03 12:49:44
May 3, 2008 at 4:24 pm #51061AnonymousInactiveWe put her in underwear (Sarah) and bought plastic underwear from Walmart to go over the underwear, that way it’s somewhat contained. After about a week there were no accidents. We used diapers at nighttime until she pretty much trained herself in that department to hold it.
We’re starting Hailey next week, as she’s almost 3!Good luck, and keep us posted. I have feelings that Hailey isn’t going to be as easy as Sarah, mainly because I left it so late.May 3, 2008 at 6:55 pm #51062hellbenntKeymasterI used the naked method (ala Ann Marie)
and also cloth training pants….I bought from the clearance/sale section from http://www.snap-ez.comI like these bcse they are cotton and so I called them big boy pants, and also I like thse bcse they have the snaps & if he went poop in them they could be taken off like a diaper (and then washed in the washing machine- they held up great!)doesn’t look like thre are any trainer deals at the moment…they are expensive, especially w/o any deals…I just bought 2 and used them at home…May 3, 2008 at 10:47 pm #51070AnonymousInactiveWell, after an accident in her pull ups this morning I decided to jump into panties today. Her little butt looks SO DARN CUTE in panties!!!! She had two accidents in them and immediately told me about them. She wasn’t upset that she was wet, but obviously NOT OK with it. How long before she starts to realize that she doesn’t HAVE to pee her pants??
I guess we sort of “cheated” this evening because DH had a rare night off from baseball so we decided to go shopping and out to eat. It’s an hour + drive so we just put on a diaper and didn’t even talk about the potty (except when we bought Elmo panties at Kohls!) I HATE that we deterred from our “every hour on the potty” mission…but I have felt so trapped all week doing this…afraid to leave the house…so it was worth a nice evening out.I had seen the Cool Alert pull ups at our walmart but they only had them in a 3T-4T size. So we went to Target…SAME THING! I guess they don’t make those in a smaller size. I bought them anyway b/c I figure they’re supposed to be the same idea as panties…just not as messy.Lori…I’m so glad you mentioned plastic underwear. That is a great idea to contain the mess!Anyway, thanks so much for all of the help and support. I haven’t been around much because our computer monitor got fried in a power outage and I’ve only been able to use my work laptop (when I remember to bring it home!)Sarah had a great birthday. She’s still singing Happy Birthday to herself! I’ll try to post pictures sometime soon!Wish us a quick and dry potty journey! -
