Keymasterto this day, almost four, we have to pretty much ‘tell’ jonah to go use the toilet- he will happily play & pee in his pants
…he is getting better about this, but still we have to tell/remind him…as for pooping, thank goodness he does that in the toilet! he ‘got’ that first which I’ve been told is unusual, but hey, I’ll take it

he’s been using the toilet w/o accidents for pooping since he was 3

InactiveWell, here is where we are with the potty training. He goes around naked except when we go out and then he can wear underwear and plastic pants. Oh, for bedtime and naps he can wear a diaper. So, far he has gone pee in the potty 7 times. I think 4 of those by himself without us saying anything. That is what we do most of the time. We just don’t say anything at all and let him decide. Funny enough though he chooses to still sit on the potty most of the day. He is scared he is going to poop on the floor. Which is interesting since he has been holding his poop. He didn’t poop at all yesterday and finally went today right before nap time in his diaper. I walked out of the room for a few minutes and when I came back I could smell the load.
I didn’t get onto him or anything, but did explain he could tell me and I would help him get to the potty. Anyway, he has only gone pee in the potty once today. It seems he is trying to hold that in too. Is that normal for them to hold the pee in too? Should I worry about that or just keep on doing what we’re doing? Thanks again ladies.May 23, 2007 at 8:43 pm #34277Anonymous
InactivePraise God! I was way to quick in what I wrote before. After naps today Luke was a potty going machine. I didn’t even have to say anything at all. Anytime he had to go pee or poop he just went and sat on the potty. I can’t believe it! He only had one accident. He was so excited that he had pooped on the potty that we took it to put in the toilet and we were picking out his stickers when I noticed he was crossing his legs. I had a feeling he needed to go, but didn’t say anything. Anyway, sure enough he started spraying the bathroom rug. I told him it was no big deal that accidents happen. I am scared to see what tomorrow will be like. How do you when they are ready for underwear all the time? I’m sure I’ll figure it out, but don’t know if there is some kind of set standard. I know I’m getting ahead of myself again. I’m sure it will still take some time and possibly some set backs before he is fully trained. Oh, you know what got him excited? I told him once he was potty trained he could get a doughnut party.
I can’t wait for him to be trained. Yummy doughnuts!

InactiveSounds like he’s making great strides!!
Good job, Luke! I think he’s ready for underwear (or nudity
) all day long right now. Putting him in pull ups or diapers will only confuse him. He needs to know that his only options are to pee in the pot or pee on the floor. Soon he’ll be choosing the pot most of the time! The doughnut party sounds like a great incentive!Of course diapers are still fine for naps and bedtime. It could still be quite some time before he wakes up dry consistently.

InactiveLike Christine mentioned, running around without a diaper was the best for us, I think we did the nude run for a little over a week, I just put really long shirts on her. I did not want to confuse her with the pull up or diaper. Then we progressed to underwear with the long shirt then eventually fully clothed!!! Congrats to Luke!

InactiveThat’s great! I would also put him in underwear during the day now. We kept using diapers at night, but got the big girl kind that pull up like underwear. We took her last pack of diapers and gave them away to my niece who was a baby and kind of made a big deal of that. Sarah also loved the stickers, and her poop motivation was ice cream! It worked like a charm. Glad to hear that things are going well. BTW, Sarah also used to hold her poop. It took her a while to feel comfortable to poop sitting down instead of her typical pose before that (standing up bent over the side of our couch
).May 26, 2007 at 1:11 pm #34554Anonymous
InactiveMore questions. Luke is doing great with going around naked and using the little potty. How do I know when he is ready for underwear around the house? Also, when are they ready for the toilet? Last question, how long before they let you know when your out in public if they need to go? I had no idea there would be so many questions to all this.

InactiveHow do you know when they’re ready for underwear around the house? I guess you’ll just have to try and see how he does. I didn’t train mine using the nudity method, so I’m not sure on that one.
When are they ready for the toilet? Well, I guess they are all different, but for my girls it was several months after they were trained using the little potty. I started giving them a choice, do you want to use the big pot like mommy and daddy, or the little pot? Sometimes they’d choose the big pot, and then after a few months when I felt they were comfortable using it I put the little potty away.
As for going out, that can be tricky for quite some time. I used to take the potty with us, (actually I still keep a little potty in the back of the van for potty emergencies), and I’d tell them we have the potty with us, so tell mommy if you have to go and I’ll stop. I used to put a thick pad (like a folded up crib pad) in their carseat in case of an accident. Also, I’d ask them to use the potty before we left the house, and that became a habit.
In public, well we’ve had our share of accidents.
Making sure they use the potty before they leave the house helps. I got into the habit of telling them as soon as we arrived at our destination, “This place has a potty. Here it is. If you need to go, tell mommy and I’ll take you to the potty.” If Luke is anything like my girls in no time he will be insisting on visiting the potty every single place you go, whether he needs to go or not.

KeymasterHow do you know when they’re ready for underwear around the house? I would just try it. I would also just TELL him when to try and pee- like every 20minutes, lol. but really I still pretty much have to TELL Jonah to go pee

When are they ready for the toilet? I would get an insert for the toilet (I know, more money
)- a cushy one from target/walmart/kmart and put it on the toilet and give the choice…the only reason I say the cushy one is because you can put it on the toilet and take it of- it’s not attached in anyway…going out: again I have to TELL him to go…it’s annoying but it gets better- I tell him to go before we leave the house and then other times when out & about…
In public: more TELLING him, lol. In a public restroom I oftentimes would hold him up so he could pee in the toilet- with him resting his feet/standing on the toilet rim- if he made a mess (actually he usually did not- sounds odd but true
) I would wipe it up…or, I would take a wipe (antibacterial) and wipe off the seat and have him sit down to pee- I’d hold himMay 26, 2007 at 9:59 pm #34596Anonymous
InactiveI wanted to add my two cents. My dd (thankfully) did well with potty training. But my friend has a dd (btwn 3-1/2 and 4) who is more willing to stand and pee on the floor than pee in the potty. Yet this little girl is a very “girly” girl who hates being dirty or messy in the least.
How do I know when he is ready for underwear around the house? On the day we started, I had her help pick out panties at Walmart (princess panties, of course) and reminded her that she didn’t want to get her princess panties dirty or wet. We didn’t do the naked method. I just took her frequently to the potty. (We had been encouraging her to go on the potty before baths. Also we’d take her to the potty any time we noticed her diaper was still dry after a longer period than normal. That way there was always a good result of peeing in the potty.)
Also, when are they ready for the toilet? We tried the little pot to start with, but from the beginning she only wanted to copy us and sit on the big potty. We put the little pot’s seat on the big potty but she didn’t like it as it moved slightly within the seat. I found that the Baby Bjorn potty seat insert (unfortunately, not cheap) gives the best fit as it has a dial you turn that makes braces press firmly against the inside of the toilet seat. Because the whole family has to share the potty, we couldn’t adhere the little cushy seats like they are supposed to be so the Baby Bjorn was a real salvation for us.
Last question, how long before they let you know when your out in public if they need to go? From the first day of wearing her princess panties, if we had to go out, I would put a Pull up ON TOP of her princess panties – like plastic pants -to “keep her princess panties clean” (and to keep me from having to clean her pee on the floor of wherever we were going). We learned where every potty was in every store, it seemed, but I would have her go potty before we left from home and while we were gone if we were away for very long. I reminded her that she needed to keep her princess panties clean.
I would definitely get additional pairs of panties – three isn’t enough since it means you have to constantly be doing laundry or hand washing panties. If you are using the white ones, you could get some fabric markers and let him help decorate the panties so that he feels ownership and pride in them (like the way my dd felt about her princess panties).
I hope he keeps doing good with potty training. It is a big step and especially hard when you have another child to deal with at the same time.
