InactiveMy son was just switched from Prevacid to the generic form of Prilosec, Omeprazole.
Does anyone have any experience that says this is bad idea? We just changed because we are with a different doctor. The generic drug is MUCH cheaper.
We were prescribed 20 mg a day for my 6.7 kg son, in one dose. I currently give it to him in the afternoon. He eats at 3, has the meds at 5, and then dinner at 5:30.
He is still up a lot at night, though he is more comfortable than he was before meds. I have given up all food with taste (dairy, soy, spicy, tomatoes, citrus, chocolate), and done his bed is slightly elevated.
Do you think he would benefit from splitting the dose into two, one in the morning and one in the afternoon?
THank you! Jen

Inactiveif you go to marci-kids.com
you can read all about medications and how to dose them. they suggest
to give the dose 2 or 3 times becaues babies metabolize these
medications so quickly.there is also a dosing calculator where you put in the med, the childs
age and weight and it will give you the recommended dosage.August 30, 2006 at 8:54 pm #12729Anonymous
InactiveHis dose may not be high enough and like Natalia said most babies need
to be dosed at least twice and preferably three times per day. I think
he’d do as well on generic Omeprazole as he would on Prevacid as long
as the dose is high enough. Is this medication in Suspension form?
Sometimes the Suspensions are a problem because if they are not
prepared correctly by the pharmacy they can lose their effectiveness
before the medication is all used up. You can read more about that at

InactiveThanks for the welcome! I have been reading everything here for a few months, and I have found it useful as I moved from Zantac to compounded to prevacid that lost potency after a week, to prevacid packets, to omeprezole.
I gave my son half of his dose this morning, and will give the other half tonight, and see if helps at all. He is cheery during the day, but has weight gain issues that tell us that the reflux is not under control.
I was hoping he would outgrow his reflux by now, since his brother started improving at this age, but he shows no signs of gaining weight or sleeping!
