InactiveHave any of you noticed your baby’s symptoms worsening or had your baby become more colicky when increasing his Prevacid dose? He’s on day 4 of 30mg and SO colicky – even more so than on the 15mg. We increased his dosage (with doctor’s ok) because he was getting colicky again at 3 months (he’ll be 3 months old tomorrow) rather than better. I’m really confused! I’m now wondering if he is having a negative reaction to Prevacid.

KeymasterI replied to you other post

it could be the form of prevacid…
or, it could be the dose…
you’re lucky that you have ‘wiggle’ room…
just try adjusting the dose until you find what works, as you research all the more

it’s a hard reflux road

InactiveI did notice this with Myles. On the lower doses he was essentially unchanged other than some very slight initial improvement which did not last for more than a few days. Then it was back to the same old thing.
When we got him on 30 mgs I could tell he was having severe tummy cramps because he was pulling up his legs, grunting and just acting like something hurt other than what usually hurt with his reflux. I was so depressed. But I read here that some babies have tummy cramps initially from the lactose and/or aspertame (probably the lactose) in the solutabs and that for many babies this passes as their bodies adapt to the medication. So as hard as it was I hung in there with the high dose (10 mg / 3 times per day) and fortunately the cramping did pass AND he finally got relief from his reflux. I remember day 10 being the turning point.
I hope things improve for him soon. I sure know how hard it is to se your baby in pain.

Inactivendrose – I remember you saying that before, and I’m so glad to hear that it turned around for you, because maybe it will for me too! I’m just waiting my 2 weeks right now and wondering what I will do next if it doesn’t work. What would you do? Do you think I should consider another medicine if at the 2 week mark he hasn’t improved at all? If so, which one do you all recommend?

Keymasterafter 2wks on 30mgs if there’s no improvement, I think (??) I’d then want some testing…just to get an idea of what’s ‘going on in there’

InactiveYes, that’s what I was thinking too…problem is my husband doesn’t agree, and he keeps reminding me that our other 2 outgrew theirs like I don’t know that! That was 10 years ago, and I don’t remember theirs being this bad (with the fussiness I mean).

InactiveEmily,
If there’s no change after 14 days on the high dose of Prevacid AND you’ve stayed on the Elimination diet, I’d probably ask for testing as well, BUT possibly I’d ask to try Zegerid first. I think most babies will respond to either drug (but I’m no expert), but there are babies who do better on one PPI than than the other, so that’s an option that would nag me if I didn’t try it.
For now I’d definitely stay on the Elimination diet and follow the instructions to the T as to when and what to add after the initial two weeks. He may have MSPI, and/or other food senstivities which will be a nightmare for you if you don’t figure it out early on.
Hang in there. It’s so hard right now but things will get better.

InactiveHi Emily, I also replied to the other post, but if after 2 weeks on the increased dose no relief, I would probably ask for a med change (and maybe the testing as well if you feel you have the strength and support). Goodluck, I know with your determination and love fo Caden you will get there.
