InactiveMy daUghter is on medicaid. And I just found out that medicaid here does not allow prevacid solutabs. The only prevacid I can get is compounded from the pharmacy. Is there anything besides paying cash that I can do in order to get the solutabs instead of the compound mixture? How do I know if the pharmacy made the compund mixture correctly?

KeymasterAm answering from my phone… can’t get link for you. Find
Prevacid 101. If you can’t find it, find Groupie Intro & there’s a link from there to it. See if insurance covers plain ‘ole capsules? It’s all in Prevacid 101 🙂

InactiveYou can buy Prevacid capsules or Zegrid over the counter for pretty cheap and then purchase caracream from http://www.refluxsolutions.com and make your own liquid compound. Zegrid and Caracream Z is the cheapest route to go and extremely effective.

InactiveNow could I buy prevacid or zegrid capsules over the counter at 15mg and break them open and just give her the beads inside the capsule instead of making my own compound mixture with caracream? She is now about 10lbs. I cant order online as I dont have a debit/credit card so I wouldnt be able to buy the caracream.

KeymasterI don’t think zegerid capsules (if zegerid even comes in capsules?) can be given ‘as is’ to babies-
but you CAN open up prevacid (or prilosec) capsules & administer the beads. if you do this, you need to give the medicine on an empty stomach and administer the beads w/ a teaspoon of applesauce, then follow up w/ a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later.February 16, 2011 at 1:28 pm #67828Anonymous
InactiveYou open 14 zegrid capsules, add 100 ml of water and a small packet of caracream from Reflux Solutions lab. Shake it up and store it in the fridge. It is good for 30 days. I have been giving that to my son for 8 months and it is fabulous. Reflux Solutions does not take credit card. Check or money order. If you want to give it that way go to http://www.refluxsolutions.com click on Caracream Z, print off the form and mail it in. If you have questions about it you can contack David or Dr. Phillips. Yes.. they are they same guys as MARCI-Kids. Reflux Solutions is their retail site. Prior to using Zegrid I used Prevacid with Caracream for a year. I loved that too. This was just a cheaper route and every bit as effective.

InactiveLaura- Can I use apple juice instead as Kora is only 2 months old? She cant use applesauce yet. I would probably put the beads in a half oz to an oz of juice. Also does marci-kids website do calculations for the beads or do I need to contact them directly for the dose? I cant pull up prevacid 101 post as I use my phone and its a bit “stupid” with links lol.

InactiveI just called the pharmacy and asked what they used to compound the prevacid with. They used unflavored sodium bicarbonate. Is this okay to use as a base to compound the prevacid, or will it be uneffective? I did read in Prevacid 101(stealing internet lol) and it did say to ask a pharmacy to use sodium bicarbonate unflavored if a compound must be used. Is this still an effective base is what I am trying to ask? If it is still effective then I have no need to try OTC prevacid, and will give the compound a try. I only gave it to her once, because I was worried it would be a waste to even try it.

Keymasteris the dose a proper dose?it’s really hard to get a pharmacy to compound the prevacid properly. If you must, then:from prevacid 101:from s&h’smum:According to marci-kids research on this, unless each dose is going to be 7ml or more (which it rarely is at the doses we’re giving), then it needs to be made with 16.8 percent sodium bicarbonate. (If you are giving 7ml or more each time then you can do 8.4 percent.) The concentration should be somewhere between 2-4mg/ml so that each dose has at least 3.5ml to ensure enough buffer.I would ask the pharmacist for a printout of all the ingredients in the compound. Even when we thought that it was being made properly, it wasn’t, b/c they were adding all kinds of other ingredients.
I hope this works for you. Be sure to shake it REALLY well so that all the sediment comes off the bottom of the bottle. Our pharmacy used a brown bottle so I didn’t realize that most of the buffer was sitting on the bottom of the container!

InactiveOkay her bottle reads 3mg per ML and they used 8.4% sodium bicarbonate. The doc says 2.5ml daily. But Marci-kids dosing says 1.5mg to 1.75mg per kg. Kora is 4.2kg so with Marci-kids dosing at 3x per day she would be getting 18mg? And state law here says all ingredients used incompounding medication must be listed on the bottle. All that is listed is the sodium bicarb. I also need info from marci kids to give to my doc to get him to rx the marci kids dosing.

Keymasterok so first figure out the dose (seems like you did)and then TELL the pharmacy to ‘humor you’ and make it w/ 16.8% sodium bicarbonate. If they will not, then TELL your doctor to please ‘humor you’ and to write out the rx to say specifically how to make it.February 16, 2011 at 9:08 pm #67850Anonymous
InactiveI am actually waiting for the pharmacy to call me. My doc rx 7.5 ml of suspension once a day however he first agreed to 15mg or half a tablet of prevacid solutabs so im concerned as to why the dosing is off by 7,5mg. It makes no sense as to why he would do 7.5 of the compounded prevacid vs 15mg solutab. I hate this stuff lol

Inactivehow many mg per ml…just bc it is 7.5 ml does not mean it is 7.5 mg…it should say some where on the the bottle how many mg per ml….my guess it is probably 2mg per ml which would mean you are giving 15mg….hope that helps

InactiveDee in one of the posts on the first page I said it was 3mg per ML. And the tab on the bottle says 2.5ML once daily (7.5)mg. Which is not right. However I found after reading the bottle some more lol they used 15 capsules at 15mg each in the compound. So I think someone got confused, cuz my doc was okay with 15mg (half) a solutab. But he only prescribed 7.5mg. Im really kicking myself in the bum for not majoring as a Phd lol.
