Prevacid Dosing??

Hi all,

I’m new here. I have a sweet 7 week old baby boy who is miserable. He has been Dx with Reflux and has a milk protein intolerance. We are now feeding soy and even though it makes him constipated pretty bad, at least he’s not projectile vomiting and spitting up clabberd milk anymore. His first doc tried him on Zantac and it did absolutely nothing. Now with a new pediatrician, we are trying the Prilosec compound. He hates it. He gags, screams, chokes, and goes crazy trying to get it into him. I took it back to the pharmacy and they flavored it, but he still chokes like crazy trying to take it. Also, his tummy seems to have gotten worse since the flavoring, and now, he has horrible gas. He doesn’t seem to be having the reflux as bad, but now instead of the tummy ache from reflux, he has it from the gas. Mylecon does nothing. I might as well give him water.

My question is, I have read on here that you can give your baby Prevacid OTC. How do you know how much to give. They are 15mg. capsules and I know that meds are dependant on weight. I am going to order caracream but I was going to try the apple sauce trick until I get the caracream. I have seen the little chart on prevacid dosing and I must be an idiot because I still don’t understand how much to give. Can someone please clarify the dosing? At this point, I’m willing to stuff bologna up his nose if it helps. Lol…

do you still have any zantac?

you can give that, too, until you get the meds ‘right.’ You can give it w/ prevacid, just make sure to space it 4hrs from the prevacid.

zantac can go up to 10mgs per kilo- don’t just take my word on this, read here:

It sounds like I’m a drug-pusher! It’s just that I KNOW that they work! I also know how hard it is until you get it figured out! so, in the meantime, you have to do what you have to do. You can ALWAYS back-off. for example, you give zantac & prevacid and finally get prevacid as high as marci-kids recommends. then, you stop the zantac and see what happens. all the while, trying to figure things out, like is it ‘diet’ i.e. MSPI?

I would inquire about Zegerid or Bufferbabies- this is all explained from the link- PPIs can take up to 14 days for you to see it’s full effects…so that’s another reason to stay w/ the zantac.

Thanks for the response. I haven’t had much time to do much on the internet since my little one won’t allow me to put him down long enough to use the computer. I finally figured out the dosing on the prevacid. Seth weighs 10 lbs. and 9oz. I gave him some prevacid today with a tad bit of apple sauce. Going to order the caracream but the apple sauce worked for now. I’m also still giving the Zantac. He had a pretty rough evening tonight. I’m going to give the prilosec a little bit longer to work and take him back to the doctor. I called his pediatrician this morning and they seem to think the constipation is causing the gas pain more than the prilosec. Poor little guy. He can’t poop and when he does finally try, it’s like rocks. We’ve tried every home type remedy there is. The Soy apparently isn’t great for the bowels. I’m at a loss as what to do. I’m going crazy here and so is my baby. I just want him to be a happy baby. He has been in misery with his tummy since the day he was born. He doesn’t know what comfortable feels like. :O(

try finding some mylanta cherry supereme. it’s difficult to find, but not impossible. some have better luck locating a store-brand equivalent, like Rite-aid brand or CVS brand or Target brand, etc. Look for the adult kind (there is no infant/childrens) and look at the ingredients to find the type that does not have any aluminum. it is safe even for newborns. my ped GI told us to use it when Jonah was an infant. give in 1ml increments, up to 5mls over the course of a 24hr period. if you see loose stools, back off…

make sure you space the zantac 4 hrs from the prevacid.

Here’s a handy chart to convert lbs to kilos:

10 lbs 9 oz = 4.8 kilos

4.8 x 10 (maximum dose by weight for zantac) = 48

that’s 48 mgs total for the day of zantac

your bottle says 15mgs/ml

this means for every 1ml of liquid medicine you administer, your baby is getting 15mgs of zantac

so 48 divided by 15 = 3.2 mls total of zantac for the day

you can divide this ‘unevenly’ and give a higher portion/dose at night

ok now to prevacid dosing

oops put it 3 times…

I’ll calculate for 1.5

4.8 x 1.5 = 7.2mgs a dose

7.2 x 3 = 21.6mgs total for the day
