InactiveOk, we started out on Prevacid 15mg from Doctor. I did 7.5 in the morning and 7.5 at night. Then we started having alot of reflux at night so I uped the prevacid to 7.5mg half solutab in am and then 15mg prevacid capsule over applesauce in the pm. I uped the pm amount myself because I had the capsules left over from a previous precrisption from the doctor. This has been great but now I only have 5 days left of the capsules and no more for the 15mg at night. Now during the day he has started to get fussy and arching his back and taking along time for his day feeds. Do you think that it is reflux related and I need to call the doctor and try to get 30mg per day? I know he is teething and that will aggravate the reflux, but if he is on the right dose, then it should not matter. The marci-kids website says he needs 30mg on the low side. He weighs 17 lbs and is about to turn 6 months old. How many of you have done great on the 30mg of prevacid and do you think that the 7.5mg is wearing off so soon since they matabilize it quicker? Any help would be great!

InactiveMyles has been on 30mg (10mg 3x’s per day) since he was 16 or 17 lbs. So, yes I do think your son may need a higher dose, and three times per day is better for most babies. I had to print the marci-kids information in order to convince my doctor to put Myles on the right dose. It really worked once he was on the right dose. Like night and day!

Keymasterfax your doctor. fax marci-kids dosing and brief, to-the-point-note:
THANK doctor for everything

say how great the prevacid WAS doing (give examples of improvement)
state weight gain since prescription
show calculations
request increase (Ie: …therefore, I request an increase in __’s dose to 30mg per day.)
THANK AGAIN

InactiveI am glad to see another 6 month old on 15 mg.
My 2 1/2 year old is on 15 mg prevacid solutabs. It has been a miracle drug in my opinion.
My 6 month old has silent reflux diagnosed as grade 3. He has been on Axid until two weeks ago when I got totally fed up with the fact that he wants to eat every two hours including nights…or especially nights. He has never slept through the night.
About two weeks ago, I gave him one of ds#1’s 15 mg prevacids two days in a row and for the first time in his entire 6 months of life he was not congested. I mentioned this to our pediatrician and he freaked out that I have him the 15 mg, but happily wrote me a prescription for the prevacid, but I needed to be giving him 7.5 mg (or half a tab).
Well, the half tab does not work as well by a long shot. I tried it for a week, and still no congestion (knock wood), but he still seems fussy and still up 4-5 times per night. Two nights ago I went back to the 30 mg and poof!!! Slept through the night for the past two nights. I could cry in relief!!
Ds is 6 months old and weighs 19 lbs. 6 oz. …
So…15 mgs is not an overdose?
Also, I would love the link to the site you all are referring to. Thanks so much!!

InactiveNo, 15 mg is not an overdose. My son gets 10mg 3x’s per day and has been on that dose since he was about 17 pounds.
Here’s the link. Print the information and take it or fax it to your doctor. That’s how I convinced mine to put my son on the right dose. He was previously under dosed and miserable.
Good luck

InactiveThanks!! I went to that site…it makes me mad at the misinformation that I have been given by at least three different doctors.
I switched from my older sons pediatrician because he absolutely refused to prescribe prevacid solutabs. Zantac never really worked for him and the doctor would never believe me and treated me like an ignorant mom who was bothering him. He finally prescribed compounded prilosec, but it was not covered by prescription insurance, was going to cost $140 and from what I read was going to loose it’s potency within 2 weeks. He had no clue about any of this when I called back to complain after trying to fill the prescription and being told there was only one compounding pharmacy in town.
On the marci site there was a long medical research paper about the link between ashma and reactive airway disease (which ds #1 has had since 4 months) and GERD. The original ped. also never connected the two. My son was on pulmicort and xeopenex nebulized breathing treatments for over a year. Whenever we would quit these his breathing would immediately get worse. Now in hindsight, it was probably all linked to the poor management of his reflux. Poor dear!!
I am so glad that I have found this site. My new pediatrician seems much more open to information and definitely listens to his moms. Smart guy!!
Thanks all for the info!

InactiveKaren,
Asthma runs in my family and in dh’s family and he (dh) and two of my children have had reflux, so I was VERY CONCERNED about the link between reflux and asthma. That’s one of the reasons I was so adamant with my doctor, and I would not give up pestering her and her staff until I got my son on the correct dose of Prevacid. He had begun to wheeze and cough and I was absolutely panicked that he would develop respiratory problems if I didn’t get his reflux under control. Thank God for Marci-kids and their research! It took me weeks to convince my doctor but once she saw the research (I faxed it to her) she finally gave Myles the dose he needed and he has never wheezed or coughed since about two weeks after starting the 30mg daily dosing schedule.
And yes, Prevacid has been a miracle drug around here, too. My son went from screaming nearly all day and eating next to nothing, to eating well and peaceful and happy most of the time.
Are you working on getting a script for 30mgs for your son?

InactiveHi,
It is Cindy. My doctor is out of town for the next three weeks and I went to the fill in doctor today and she would not give Marshall 30mg of Prevacid. She said that she only will prescribe it if they are losing weight and not eating. I tried to tell her that I am here now so that it will not get to that point. Hello…crazy doctor. She said that since the 15mg in working at night when I give it to him and during the day is when he starts refluxing, to give it to him 7.5mg am and 7.5mg pm. I told her I tried that and it did not work. So she said if he is eating his solids and not wanting the bottle then it is not reflux and to give him more solids and less milk?????Crazy again. Main source should be formula. So now I have to wait three weeks for my doctor to return to get the 30mg. I even took her all of the info from Marci-Kids and she still did not care. So now I can only give him 15mg per day and we are going to back to square one and my little on is going to be put through hell. I even tried to explain to her that my doctor gave him 30mg of Zegerid why can she not give him 30mg of Prevacid? Same thing just another PPI. I am so mad I just got in the car and started crying. I do not want him to be in pain, I just want him to be happy. why do these doctors not understand.
Also, should I give him some Zantac in the middle of the 7.5 in the moring and 7.5mg at night? Would this help any until I get to the doctor? He weighs 17 lbs. I think that 2ml twice a day would work? Please let me know if any of you have any insight to this.

InactiveHi Cindy,
I’m so sorry about what you are going through. I went through it for a few weeks until I finally convinced the doctor to put Myles on the right dose. I cried alot too, and I truly know how you feel.
These d*mn doctors make me so mad.
Increasing his solids and less milk is ridiculous. At his age the formula is what he needs most. She obviously knows very little about babies. Maybe look for a Ped. GI? Unless you think Marshall can hang on three more weeks and you’re pretty sure your regular pediatrician will prescribe the 30mg.
Do you still have some Zantac? Many moms use it in conjunction with a PPi until the PPi begins to take effect, or in your case until you can get the right dose for him. You should give the Zantac at least two hours before or after the Prevacid. Maybe try giving him 7.5mg Prevacid in the am and pm and Zantac midday. He’s likely outgrown his Zantac dose by now so you should probably check the dosing for his weight. I think it’s at Marci-kids, but if not someone here probably knows where to find it.
You can also try Mylanta Cherry Supreme. I think it’s 1/2 to 1 ml for his age. Too much will give him loose stools. Lots of moms have said it helps their babies.
I wish I could help more. I feel so bad because I truly know what it’s like to see your baby in pain.

InactiveMy Ped. GI is the one on vacation for 3 weeks and he is the only one in town so the regular ped is who filled in for him. I think this is why she did not prescribe it. Regular peds. seem not to be aggresive on medications. I do think that my Ped. GI will give him the 30mg.
Did Miles start to do better on the 15mg and then you noticed that it was coming back with the pain and then fought to get the 30mg. Did he stop eating until you could get him on the 30mg or was is just some bottles once the medicine wore off? I just do not want to go back to him taking less when he started doing great and eating more until just recently. Did this happen with Miles?
