InactiveDD has been put on prevacid solutabs. We stopped thickening her bottles because it seemed to slow down her digestion quite a bit and she wasn’t feeding very well. Some days less than 13 oz and she didn’t even want to eat that. There was some sleep feeding and slightly forced feeding. I didn’t push her when she cried but if she was just pushing the nipple out with her toungue I’d try and try again. So, now with the unthickened bottles, she throws up every morning. Previously she was a silent refluxer before the meds. Is it possible that the feeding 30 min after her meds is causing her to spit up? Should I try to wait longer? She’s already upset about waiting the half hour though. Ugh. She doesn’t spit up at all with her other feedings, although she is not eating an appropriate amount for her weight (11 lbs) or age (almost 12 weeks).
She’s only eating about 16 oz a day. Ped says she should be eating 22 oz. I’m so afraid of her next weight check. She was gaining weight beautifully before but I can’t see how she will now.
The good part is she is so much happier. She’s smiling and cooing and not crying during feeds. She just seems to have little to no appetite. If I get her to take 3 oz within an hour, It’s just about a miracle.
So what do you gals think?

InactiveHave you tried a formula change?
I don’t have much advice, but wanted to send out a hug…

InactiveI certainly understand your concern! Myles rarely ate more than 15 ounces per day, and I was very worried, but his growth rate remained normal. There’s was only one period of time when he was losing weight, but that was before he was on Prevacid. After he got on the right meds and dose his pain was gone but he still only took an average 0f 15-16 ounces per day for several months, and he continued to gain weight and remained in the normal range for his age.

If you are worried you can ask to bring her in for a weekly weight check…just to make sure she’s gaining…and to put your own mind at ease. At our clinic we can just call and asked to have baby weighed and the nurse will weigh the baby and check with the doctor and then give a call to let us know if their weight is on track.
Good news that she’s feeling better.
Silent refluxers do sometimes start spitting up. Some of the moms here have noticed that it somtimes happens after they are on meds…possibly because it doesn’t hurt anymore so they don’t swallow it back down as much.
Myles almost always threw up his morning bottle. I don’t know why, but that was usually the worst feeding of the day. Maybe it’s because they are so hungry they gulp it down so fast. Or maybe because she cries while waiting the 30 minutes to eat. Maybe you can just thicken that one feeding and see how it goes. I used to thicken just Myles’ bedtime bottle and not any of the otheres.
Good luck and I hope the Prevacid continues to help her and that her weight gain stays on track.

InactiveI wouldn’t think that the feeding 30 minutes after the med is causing vomitting. I couldn’t see why it would, though I guess stranger things have happened.
I would try to watch out for force feeding, if possible. It can make feeding problems worse, though I know it’s easier said than done sometimes. As for sleep feeding, I’m not one to talk.
Glad to hear that she’s at least happy. That’s great.
Good luck.

InactiveMarshall used to do the same thing…spit up when we stopped the oatmeal in the bottles and he would not take alot of it. We started the prevacid and we had to come back to the doctor for a visit 2 weeks later and I told him that he was still not drinking alot of formula. So he suggested Enfamil A.R. with added rice which thickens in the tummy. I remember the first bottle and he sucked down the 6 ounces and wanted more???? I was so confused. He was previously on Alimentum(sp?). So I thought if he can handle Enfamil A.R. then he can handle any type of formula. Well so I went to regular Similac with iron and the same thing started back..not wanting bottle etc…So I got the last can of ready to feed Enfamil A.R. out and he just downed the bottle. So it maybe the formula. Enfamil A.R. has worked great for us. You may want to try it if she does not have mspi. & nbsp;
