InactiveLast week I wrote a letter and faxed it with the MARCI info to Elijah’s pedi GI.
Elijah was on Prilosec Suspension that had been flavored twice, he kept
spitting it out and we were concerned that he wasn’t getting the
correct dose and were wondering if it was no longer active. And his
acid reflux was worse. There were a lot of changes at the same time as when he started taking
the Prilosec..mom stoped his reglan, he was teething, he had a clear
runny nose and he started using a jumper-roo which he loved. We asked for Prevacid Solutabs as Zegerid needs prior approval and who
knows how long that would take and we figured with the solutabs we
could be sure that he would get the right dose and we wouldn’t have to
worry about destabilization like with the regular Prilosec suspension. The pedi GI did call in a script for the solutabs at 15 mg/day divided into 2 doses.
We saw her yesterday and
even though she knows that PPI’s are safe and can be given in higher
dosages, she refused to prescribe even the 1mg/kg/dose 3 x day for
Elijah. He weighs about 22 lbs so his dose, according to MARCi should
be aprox 11 mgs 3 times a day.She also refused to give us a script for pepcid for breakthrough pain
because she said a new study came out saying that didn’t really work.He seems to be doing well after switching to the Prevacid, much less
acid reflux. We also put the jumper away and figure we will wait a
month or so and if is acid is controlled we will try it again. He
really loves it.But he is having break through acid at night and mom ran out of the pepcid with no refills (regular pedi precribed it)
I know Zantac is an h2 like pepcid, but does it come OTC in liquid form?
Does anyone use any OTC h2’s in any form for their gerdlings? Are their
h2 capsules that can be opened and used like the Prilosec is?Mom is melting the Prevacid solutab in water and he is taking it
through the syringe because it is mostly water and he doesn’t mind. (he
vomited his first and second dose of the solutab when they tried to put
it in his mouth..I wasn’t there to see how they did it)I’m pretty sure I read that the Prevacid solutabs can be melted in water and given that way, am I right?
I also looked at Gaviscon which I read about here and it advertises
itself as being able to keep acid down by using alginic acid or
sodium alginate which foams up and protects the esophagus.Has anyone used it for their gerdling(s)? We are thinking of getting it to use at night to help with the breakthrough acid pain.
If you have used it, how long after the last PPI med dose do you wait to give it?
Do you give it at bedtime every night or do you wait until the baby wakes up with acid reflux?
How much gaviscon do 22 lb babies take?
The only difference I see between Mylanta and Gaviscon is the sodium alginate.
Thank God he is doing better, and maybe he will continue to do well with the lower dose (except at night).
The pedi GI said to call if things get worse. I don’t know what she
will do about it but I wish she had given him a dosage that he could
take 3 times a day in the first place. She did though, thank me for the MARCI information I faxed her.

KeymasterI dont know anything about gaviscon dosing. I know that w/ mylanta cherry supreme, you cannot overdose- you know you’ve ‘gone too far’ when the dose results in too loose of stools…also, you ‘treat’ mylanta like zantac/pepsid/tagament & give 2 hrs (or longer) seperate from the PPI…
I also don’t know about OTC meds like zantac/pepsid/tagament…
can you just ask the ped for a zantac renewall ‘for emergenicies’ pretty please (like to keep in the diaper bag or over grandma’s house

InactiveThe dosage on Gaviscon is for children under 12, there is no real dosage information for babies. I would use the Mylanta Cherry Supreme, most people have success with it. I would keep asking your doc for a higher dose at night, it may only take an extra 5mg or so. When we had some problems at night a couple of months ago, we increased our nightime dose by 2.5mg and the wakings stopped.
Hope you can find some relief for him soon.
