InactiveI tried to look on the groupie intro but couldn’t find an answer. Jack was just switched from the Solutabs (22 mg 2x a day) to the Prevacid liquid suspension (3 ml 2x a day) by the Ped. GI. My question is whether I have to time the suspension around meals now because there is no enteric coating?

InactiveNo, you don’t have to time the suspension around meals. But I’d personally be cautious of the suspension. It’s notoriously unstable and usually not made correctly.
Check out the thread “about pharmacy compounded PPIs” stickied under the medications forum. It talks all about how these compounds need to be prepared to be stable.I personally found it near impossible to get a pharmacy to do it right- it can’t have ANY flavourings whatsoever including any sweeteners, among other specifications.Ask for a printout of what’s in the compound. If you notice things getting worse rather than better, consider the compound as the potential reason. Or, that maybe his dose is too low. Not to be pessimistic- some others have reported success with the compound. I’m just talking from our experience, which was a nightmare.Good luck. I hope it works better for you. Why the switch?September 28, 2007 at 9:36 am #43433Anonymous
InactiveLori is right, it can be made wrong. We did the prilosec suspension and found it really easy, but we had it made at a compounding pharmacy that was over an hour away, and they had it shipped to us overnight. We had to pay for the shipping and then submit to insurance ourselves, but I have to say, by getting it compounded correctly, it worked wonders for Carter and not having to time it and having it very easy to administer was worth the little extra expense. We also had it compounded every two weeks as we had heard the suspension can loose it’s potency quickly. The doctor thought we were nuts, but it worked and that’s all that mattered.

InactiveWe use the Prevacid suspension as well. It’s worked so well for us and it’s so nice not having to time it around meals. We have never had any problem with ours, but many people do, so be aware in case you notice it not working well. Good luck with it!
Oh, and we do only get 2 weeks worth at a time – just in case.
