Does anyone know if Prevacid wears off or if it is something that stays in the baby’s system and you maintain by giving it every day? As some of you know from my other posting, Jack started 7.5 mg of the Prevacid Solutabs about two weeks ago. I’m finding that he does very well during the day after he has taken the medicine, but by the evening he is fussy and not eating well again. This is bad now because I’m back to work and my husband is giving him expressed milk in the bottle during the day and I’m trying to breastfeed in the evening, so he should be getting the majority of his daily food intake in the evenings, but he isn’t because he is pulling off, arching his back, crying, etc.
I’m worried that he might have developed a preference for the bottle already, but my husband says I’m crazy b/c we’ve only been giving him the bottle since Monday. I really want to call the Ped. tomorrow to see if he will up the dose to 7.5 mg 2x a day. I want to make sure that I don’t sound crazy when I say it’s wearing off, especially if it is not a medication that isn’t supposed to. I appreciate any input you have. yes, you are right.. it is believed that prevacid only lasts part of the day.. that is why it is usually broken up into atleast 2 doses. BUT if your ped is like my GI ped.. he wont go for it… my GI ped told me that is lasts 24 hrs.. soo some of them are still stubborn in their old thinking 😉 . you might need to prepare yourself for battle
in the meantime (as you deal w/ trying to get the dose increased) I would give zantac also- space it 2-4hrs sperate from the Prevacid
you can do 5-10mgs per kilo of the zantac per day- dont take my word for it, talk w/ your pharmacist- s/he has
an electronic device called an ipharmacist which is updated regularly with all the current dosing. ask your pharmacist to check her/his ipharmacist
a pharmacist checked it recently and this is what it says for oral pediatric dosing of zantac:
Duodenal and gastric ulcer: children 1 month to 16 years: 2-4 mg/kg/day divided twice daily to a maximum dose of 300 mg/day
GERD and erosive esophagitis: children 1 month to 16 years: 5-10 mg/kg/day divided twice daily. GERD max dosage: 300 mg/day. erosive esophagitis max dosage: 600 mg/day

here is really good info to give to your doc, but i have to warn you, some of the people here have had VERY close minded ingorant doctors who wouldnt even read this info and were insulted…if that is the case you may need to find a new doctor
i emailed marci-kids directly, and had their head pharmacist, Dr Phillips (who created zegerid) call our ped, and “educate”her
after that we got a nice high PPI dose and i had a different child.ok….so start with this:

oh and as for the zantac….it never helped us, but we did get some OTC pepcid complete for night time acid breakthrough and it worked like a CHARM. Dr Phillips told me to use half a chewable tablet in a teaspoon of water for my then 8 month old. pepcid is an h2 blocker just like zantac. just a thought. many parents use h2 blockers while waiting for docs to increase the PPI dose.
