InactiveMy son is 5 1/2 weeks old. He has silent reflux. He was on Zantac but his new pedi switched him to Prevacid solutabs. It seems like ever since he has been on these, he sleeps less. He take like 30 minutes naps, if that, during the day and he wakes up very easily. He gets up every 2-3 hours to eat at night, not sure if that is normal for his age or if it is the sleeping problem he is having.
Do any of you know if prevacid can do this?
We ahve also put him on an RS formula which is helping a lot. He doesn’t having any gaging speels now and his tummy is not gurgling anymore. We are thinking about trying to handle the reflux with out medications.

Inactiveway back I heard someone that said this, but not sure if a connection was ever made. Hard to figure out if it’s reflux keeping them awake or something else.

Keymasterhow long has he been on the solutabs? if it’s less than 2wks, then perhaps he’s not getting hte full effects of the medicine and so therefore not feeling well and not sleeping well?
is the solutab dose a http://www.marci-kids.com dose?
are you giving it on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later?

InactiveHe has been on it for 3 weeks. He takes it twice a day. He has not had a dose since Friday and he is sleeping better and more content during the day and eats well, which he always has done. The new RS formula is working great. I was told to put the tab in his cheek and follow it with a bottle.
Can silent reflux be managed with out medication and just with formula and the other things like propping him up etc as long as he is gaining weight and is more content?

Keymasterif the reflux was/is caused by an intolerance or an allergy to a protein (milk or soy), then addressing the issue via formula can most definitely help.
if baby is not in pain then baby does not necessarily need medicine.
just keep in mind that if you do stop the prevacid, then if you ever decide/need to start it up again, it can take up to two weeks for it to ‘build’ up in his system so it can take up to two weeks to see the effects of the medication…
if you do give the solutabs, they are best given on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later.November 29, 2009 at 8:20 pm #64763Anonymous
InactiveThank you for your reply. It is just so hard to know what is the best thing sometimes. Have you ever heard of prevacid causing sleep problems in infants aside from the gerd?

InactiveThank you hellbennt for your replies. My DH and I decided to keep giving our LO his prevacid and we are now giving it 30 minutes before his bottles.
Now we are just trying to decide if we should by a sleep wedge or the guardian sleeper. Do you have any comments on these products?

InactiveHi
I am also in the process of trying to decide whether or not my little girl has reflux or milk/soy allergy. She is currently on prevacid solutabs and she does sleep really good if I make sure I get her burps out BEFORE lay her down. I also have her on her wedge and also the cradle proped up with blankets underneath it.What kind of formula is RS?November 30, 2009 at 3:30 pm #64770Anonymous
InactiveThe RS stands for Rice Starch Added. Similac makes it but so does Walmart if you have one close to you, the parent choice brand is FDA regulated and is the same exact thing as the name brands but 10.00 less for a can of powder that is 25 oz. The formula is thicker then the normal kind, almost like a heavy cream, just a little less thick. I use Dr Browns bottles, my LO was using the stage 1 nipple but with this I have to use the stage 2. It is milk based, but, it is broken down a lot so they can digest it. This has worked way better for us than the sensative and soy formula. No more gurgling tummy and less gas and gaging.
We are going to go ahead and keep him on the prevacid for now because he has been doing so much better the last several days and we don’t want to mess a good thing up.November 30, 2009 at 4:35 pm #64771Anonymous
Inactiveoh okay. I am currently breast feeding and have been wracking my brain on whether or not to switch to formula as to hope she would get better. But my GI doc thinks we should hold steady for now.
we are on Prevacid 2 a day 7.5each and also zantac 1.3ml 2 day. We have been doing this for a week now.My GI doc advised to give prevacid 1 1/2hrs after eating and then wait 30 min after to feed.November 30, 2009 at 5:47 pm #64772Anonymous
InactiveI was only able to breast feed for 2 weeks, my milk never came in so I didn;t have that struggle. The only advantage that I can see to using formula is that you can get one that is thicker than breast milk. My LO has more of the silent reflux so the prevacid with this formula has been the right combo for us. With every baby is different and sometimes you just have to try things.
How often does your LO eat? Mine feeds every 2-3 hours…. so it is hard to figure out when that 30 min window is, so I like your GI docs dosage idea. I am going to try that. Do you know if it is OK if they eat more than 30 minutes later?November 30, 2009 at 8:38 pm #64775hellbennt
Keymastermamas: if you are breastfeeding and want to continue, then you can!
if you’re breastfeeding and want to switch to formula, you might find that you wind up going from one formula to another and maybe then figuring it out and then kicking yourself that you stopped breastfeeding. OR you might decide to quit breastfeeding and be glad about the decision. so hard!
but if you think it’s something in your milk, it would be a PROTEIN in your milk and there is a way to figure that out- you can do the TED which is ‘just’ 2 weeks of a very strict diet. it is TOTALLY do-able. I did it! I’m glad I did bcse while there wasn’t anything major in my diet (milk or soy) affecting my baby, there WERE some ‘odd’ things, lol, that I learned I couldn’t eat…November 30, 2009 at 8:43 pm #64776hellbennt

so true. some babies cannot tolerate thickened feed & some seem to do well with them…

I think in the Medicines Forum, there are ‘stickied’ posts (ones kept at the top of the list) where these questions are answered- an empty stomach for a breastfed baby might be empty faster than a formula fed baby, bcse breastmilk is digested faster-
