Previcid?

My son will be 9 weeks on Sunday and was diagnosed with reflux. He weights 10# 10 ounces. He was on Previcid which I didnt think worked so the Ped GI gave me some samples of Axid. Now I know that the previcid was somewhat working cuz the Axic does NOTHING for him.

The previcid we were giving him was 1/2 of a 15 mg solutab once a day. So that is only 7.5 mg once a day. I played around to see if it made a difference if I gave it to him in the morning, afternoon or before bed. It really didnt matter what I did… if I gave it to him in the morning he was good to go until just about bedtime (11 pm). If I gave it to him at night, it covered the night and morning but the afternoons were awful.

I am wanting to put him back on the previcid since that seemed to help a little but I think the dosage is way too little. His peditrician WILL NOT up his dosage. ANd they WILL NOT allow me to give him both Axid and Previcid. What should I do? I tried to call the GI but no call back yet!

Please help I am at my wits end. I was even in tears talking to his peditricians nurse.

Is there anthing I can do?

Ugg…many of us have been where you are right now. The only real answer is to find a doctor who will give your baby the dose he needs. many of us (including me) have had better luck with family docs. They see many adult patients with GERD so they tend to be more sympathetic and they may be more familiar with PPI meds.

Another option which has worked for quite a few moms here is to call Dr. Phillips at http://www.marci-kids.com and ask him to call your ped. He has been able to convince some doctors to try his dosing recommendations.

I agree with that.

Not to scare you, but the longer your little one is in pain, the more days he has to decide to quit eating which will lead to feeding aversions. You are on the right path to get it taken care of now.

You need to fight to get a higher dose. We started at 7.5mg/day and then went to 7.5mg 2x/day and then I asked for 7.5mg 3x/day but was told no but that I could try 15mg 2x/day which was more than I was asking for and wow a new baby emerged. And I would use the Axid for 2wks with the prevacid until it kicks back in. I think they have to be spaced 4hrs apart, but I may be wrong. Those are just my opinions. Good Luck.

ok so here is my problem now…..

The kids are on state medicaid and through the insurance they will not cover the previcid. I have 6 days left. The nurse said she would give me a few samples, otherwise, he is back to Zantac which did not work either.

If I can get the Ped. office to get an authorization for the previcid then we are ok but still no higher dosage. Now here is my ?… can my son stay on both Axid AND Previcid or should I take him off Axid in 2 weeks. Since doing both he seems a little happier.

Thanks for yor help and I am definately going to keep fighting for a higher dosage.

FAX the doctor. thank dr. then make short statements. no feelings. just facts. baby’s weight, dose, symptoms etc. then ask for increase in prevacid to 2x a day. REQEST REFERRAL to ped GI. say in the meantime ped can CONSULT w/ ped GI so your baby can get some relief.THANK AGAIN.

anyway, there have been LOTS of babies on both meds- just space them 4hrs apart. we’re not doctors, but OUR DOCTORS (ped GIs) have told us to do this…my own baby was on prevacid and zantac (like axid)

assistance programs, many times they provide the medicine for free if
you meet their criteria.

You can contact 1-800-830-1015 for the TAP Prevacid Patient Assistance Program. They GIVE prevacid (capsules only) away for free if you meet certain guidelines. You can even have partial prescription drug coverage. I do, and it would cost over $300 per month for the boys prevacid alone if I did not get it from them.

we are on illinois medicaid and we have had prevaicd for a year, no problems. they have to cover a PPI for you if your child is not responding or getting better with an h2 blocker.

Oh my goodness. What an awful situation. I’m so so so sorry you’re having to deal with this mumbo jumbo in addition to just being a mommy of a GERDling which is tough enough!! I don’t know anything about medicaid but I would also encourage you to try and find a ped that will up the dose. My dd suffered WAAAAAAAAAY too long because I didn’t know better and trusted the ped we had to know better. BIG mistake. They just don’t a lot of the time. Fight for that dose! Once you have a baby that isn’t writhing in pain, all seems right with the world, really. And it’s possible! I hate pumping Kate with meds three times a day but it keeps her the happy giggly sweet baby she is. Hang in there! I hope you get this figured out soon, I’ll be thinking of you!
