My 3 mo old is currently on 2.5ml of compounded prilosec 2x day, once in the am and once at “bedtime.” Usually, I give him the prilosec before his bath. 20-25 mins later I give him 1 tsp of extra strength mylanta (mint flavor) and feed him. I have been doing this for almost 3 weeks. Is it possible that the mylanta is interacting w/the prilosec? His sleep hasn’t improved and he seems really uncomfortable after this feeding. Should I stop the mylanta or switch to a different kind?
I am not sure about the mylanta interfeering with the prilosec but I have seen on this formum that you should use the Mylanta Cherry Supreme when giving this. It doesn’t contain aluminum like the others…
Absolutely the mylanta is interacting with the prilosec, these need to be spaced about 4hrs apart or the mylanta doesn’t allow the prilosec to do it’s job. Mylanta cherry supreme is what most of us use/used b/c it doesn’t have aluminum in it but as long as yours doesn’t have aluminum it is fine. I would try the “bedtime” bottle without the mylanta and see if that helps, you can give mylanta with Zantac (h2 blocker) but not Prilosec (PPI). HTH.
Thanks so much- I will skip the mylanta with his bedtime feeding and see what happens- can’t be any worse?!
FYI- CVS carries their own version of cherry supreme. They had Mylanta CLASSIC cherry, but the CVS brand was cherry supreme. I am going to give it a try.
Yes it does! Prevacid, Prilosec and Nexium are all PPI’s so you need to space any antacid (like mylanta, tums, etc) about 4hrs apart, look in Laura’s groupie intro there is information about those there. HTH.
