InactiveI have been introducing solids slowly but it just seems to make her reflux worse

All the drs and health visitors keep bugging me to hurry up as she needs Iron and it will help the reflux. Well it’s not!!!
Tonight she had some and straight after she went right downhill and was moaning and in pain again, tilting her head, arching. I’m not sure if she had too much or if it was a flavour that didn’t agree with her?!?
Either way if its too lumpy she gags/chokes and throws up so i am sticking to stage 1 foods but even this can be difficult as after a few bites she will start to reflux it and gag. It’s so sad as she is very keen on them and gets excited when she sees the bowl of food coming and she seems to love it

But it seems to make things worse, what do you think i should do??
Stop solids or just give her tiny bits each day? Does anyone else have this problem? I don’t want her to refuse them because it causes more pain
Oh and right before bed she got very worked up and screamed causing a major reflux attack, couldn’t breathe, choking, gagging. Hence i couldn’t get her to drink all her dose of medicine therefore making it worse arrrrrrrrrgggggggg

Keymasternatalie,
just a thought- there have been recent postings that low iron can be caused by bleeding somewhere in the GI tract: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=6274
mabe this will warrent your getting your baby scoped (endoscopy)? so that the doctors can get a better idea of what is going on??
say you want your baby checked for
oops didn’t mean to copy the whole post…
anyway, that’s my thought for the day

InactiveHave you tried the infant cereals yet? They are usually iron fortified and maybe she can tolerate those better right now.
Which fruits and vegetables have you tried so far? Myles did best with pears initially. Supposedly they are easier on the tummy than many of the other fruits.
When I started solids with all of mine I only gave them about 1 tablespoon once or twice a day initially. Then gradually increased the amount and variety as the seemed to tolerate them well.
She may just not be ready yet. Despite what friends and health visitors are telling you, the AAP says that a baby can thrive on nothing but breast milk or formula for the first year. Her formula should have iron in it. If they are concerned about her iron levels have they suggested a blood test. It’s a simple finger prick sample and can tell you if her iron level is adequate. Myles had it done at 9 months because he was not eating well and the doc was concerned about his iron. His was just fine.

InactiveI think that everyone has gotten different advice from their doctors but our ped GI said that pears, green beans and squash tend to be the easiest for reflux babies to handle (after cereal has been introduced).

InactiveI just did a search on the forum to try to answer this same question…and you posted it today!!

Sarah has been on rice cereal once a day for about 3 weeks with no problems. She has had green beans for about a week with no apparent problems. I gave her pears over the weekend and now she seems to be WORSE! I was surprised to read that pears are supposed to be the easiest…I figured I’d get on here and find out that they aggrivate reflux. Grrrr! I wish I knew what was causing her flare ups. Every time she refluxes now she fusses and every hiccup seems to be painful for her.
She started on a high dose of Zegerid a month and a half ago but maybe it’s time for an increase??I found out the sitter was giving her rice cereal with bananas in it…could that be the problem? She had that a couple days last week.
Natalie – I feel your frustration! I was JUST starting to think that everything was under control and then WHAM………..back to square one.

I hope we’re both able to find the answers we’re looking for!!

InactiveI don’t really have any great advice, except to go slowly. Solids also made things worse for Hailey. In retrospect, I wish we would have had the pain better controlled before we starting going full force. Now I think that really, there’s no rush.
Good luck to you both.

InactiveWe were told about the three foods that I mentioned above, but I definitely remember other people posting that pears were a problem for their refluxers. I’m thinking that the problem was ascorbic acid, but I might be confusing that with a different food.

InactiveI remember reading a post by someone on here that had read that bananas were extremely good for refluxers. We started Abby on very thin rice cereal at about 5 months, then started adding bananas (which she loved), then pears, applesauce, squash, sweet potatoes and least favorite of all, green beans and peas (love the faces she makes when she eats them
). As with most things babies and reflux, it really is trail and error. Where is that instruction book????Robin

InactiveThanks everyone, i would prefer to have her pain controlled and its not at the moment so it makes things worse.
She seems to be gagging on anything other than milk at the moment!
