Let me quickly run down what I have been through. My daughter is almost 2 months old and she has been diagnosed with silent reflux. Silent reflux is the worst because she is gaining weight so of course doctors do not take it seriously. I actually video taped my daughters reflux fits to show to him. In the beginning she would arch her back, scream in pain, kick her legs, have wet hiccups and burps every night from 6 pm-2 am. It was exhausting. The only way to get her to sleep was after she exhausted herself by crying. We have been through several formulas and medicines and I am here to get any advice and guidance I can recieve. We have now reduced the crying fits, however she still can not sleep well at night because she is still fighting the burn…Formula’s she has been on:Enfamil Lacto Free- they no longer manufacture this brandEnfamil Prosobee- she spit this up everywhere!Similac Sensitive Powder- no longer spit up but was soo fussy and gassyEnfamil Nutramigen with Enflora- she did aweful on this!Similac Sensitive Ready to Feed liquid- has been on this for 2 weeks and so far so good. It is not perfect but it is the best result we can get***Each feeding is thickened with beechnut rice cerealMedicine we have triedMylanta- temporary fix and only helped for about an hourAxid- 1.5 ml x 2 a day just didn’t workPrevacid oral suspension- she threw up every feeding after taking thisAxid-2ml x 2 day worked ok for a week and a half***Today we began prevacid solutabs(we take the 15 mg tab and break it into 4 parts, I gave her one part this morning and am going to give her one part this afternoon) I also gave her a 2ml dose of axid this afternoon 4 hours away from the H2 blocker. My biggest questions are:Is 7.5 mg of Prevacid enough for a 11 lb 7 oz baby?Should I give one or two doses of Axid throughout the day? More or less keep her on her normal Axid schedule until the Prevacid kicks in?Do I really need thickened feedings if my baby is not throwing up? The reason the doctor has her on thicken feedings is he claims that it helps get the formula through the esophagus. My daughter has stopped breathing, chokes, sneezes, coughs and wheezes still. However with the medicines the screaming fits have lessened. She just can not sleep with the wheezing and choking. She is constantly trying to breath. Thanks for reading this and any advice would be great! I have done tons of research but it is helpful to talk to others that have been through this as well1December 2, 2009 at 4:48 pm #64840Anonymous
Inactiveyou should start to notice some diff with the Prevacid.
My little girl is 2mths old but she is 13lbs and she is on 15mg of prevacid split into 7.5mg in morning and 7.5mg at night.Prevacid…Must be on empty stomach 1 1/2 hr after she last ate and then wait 30min before you feed.I don’t know how you are splitting that tablet 4 ways. When I split it in half it crushes all up.Axid????? same as Zantac??? I give Zantac 2hrs after Prevacid twice a day 1.3ml.She was on 1.3mls at your weight twice a day.I am exclusive breastfeed so I’m not sure about formula stuff. But I have considered going to formula for any relief but was afraid to because of the things you went through. my Pedi suggested alimentum – maybe try that one if you need to.Are you seeing a GI doc?congestion is a sign of reflux. you can try proping her crib/bassinett up.I spray the baby nasal spray in morning and then suck her nose out.But I hear you about the boot camp thing I am right there with ya…. the month of Oct and Nov are all blurry..If you get a chance you read a lot of posts that I have had there is a lot of information out there. Just do a search on trouble tummyDecember 2, 2009 at 5:53 pm #64843hellbennt
Keymasterhi & welcome!
she may NOT need thickened feeds. some say it helps. some say it’s old-fashioned advice from peds. some say it bothers their already troubled & sensitive digestive systems. you are the mama, so you can read/research about it and decide what works best for your baby.here’s where you can read about the prevacid and, also from here, there’s a link w/ ‘proper’ axid dosing- go to the last post on the page:
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1http://www.marci-kids.com is at the forefront of research of PPIs and dosing in infants. you can learn there what her proper prevacid dosing should be.
here is about reflux and it’s ‘relation’ to protein intolerances and allergies, go to the second post:
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2697&PN=2here is about the different formulas:https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=6013
