InactiveHi
Just a quick question. I am currently doing battle with the insurance company as they don’t cover prevacid over 1 year of age since there are over the counter meds available.
The insurance will cover protonic so the doctor has given me a script for that. I am not real happy about changing him as he is doing well on the prevacid so I am in the process of trying to appeal the decision with the insurance.I haven’t been real successful with the search on the forum, just wondering if anyone is on Protonic or if anyone has heard anything about it. TIA

InactiveIt might help if I had spelled it correctly!
Anyway any extra advice would be appreciated!April 6, 2006 at 1:40 pm #5522Anonymous
InactiveProtonix is another PPI like Prevacid or Prilosec and works in pretty much an identical manner. I am surprised that your insurance would cover it and not Prevacid, since Protonix has no FDA approval for pediatric use, while Prevacid and Prilosec do. Is it in the form of capsules or a compound? Since he is over 1, if you are using the capsules, you should just open them up and sprinkle them over applesauce, like you would do with Prevacid. Make sure that you give them to him on an empty stomach and 30 minutes before a full meal. I would recommend using the capsules rather than a compound, as the majority of such compounds become unstable very quickly.

InactiveYes Isaac uses Protonix and we absolutely love it! This is the only ppi that we have had success with so far. My ped gi says it is one of the best out there but that is just his opinion. I have also found it to keep his reflux under control at the same dose for a while. We get ours compounded and that makes it really easy to give to him. Funny though that I had to fight my insurance to cover it and have to each time that I get a new rx! We also noticed that the only side effect on this medicine that Isaac had was a headache for a day or two (he kept holding his head). Feel free to ask me any questions as I think only 1 other person uses it here though i could be wrong! I hope that it works really well for you!

InactiveI was on Protonix for about 1 year & it worked just fine. I noticed a difference in about 3 days & by day 7 I was in great shape.

Inactiveok, so I have found an amazing pharmacist/compounder who has been battling my insurance company to get some answers. She has found that they will cover solutabs however Michael is (found out today) officially allergic to dairy. I understand they have trace amount of dairy, so I sent her on another wild goose chase. She found that they will also cover the packets that you dissolve. I haven’t had a lot of luck finding info in my search on the forum so I am wondering how do people like using the packets and does anyone have any helpful hints as to how to administer it? TIA
