I am planning to start trying for baby number 2 this summer. I have always wanted to have my kids close in age, and we are in a good place in our life for another baby. However, I am scared to death of the idea of having another difficult baby and a toddler to take care of.
Dose anyone out there know of anything that should be avoided or done during pregnancy to reduce the risk of reflux and other GI issues? I read in a few posts that antibiotics during pregnancy could cause problems. I did take antibiotics twice during my pregnancy, once in the second month and ounce in the fifth month. It would be interesting to find out how many of us reflux moms did take antibiotics. If anyone has any tips or articles or books or anything to recommend please let me know. I would love to spare my next child from all of this if at all possible.

My dd was also given antibiotics immediately after she was born. I’ve always thought that the two were related. There have been some discussions on this before so you might want to do some searching on topics. Good luck!
March 24, 2006 at 10:06 am #4560AnonymousInactiveI was on antibiotics twice during my pregnancy too. Once when I had an
emergency appendectomy when I was 16 weeks and once around 6 or 7
months for a UTI. My DD was also given 48 hours of antibiotics
immediately after birth since I had a fever during delivery. I’ve also
always suspected a connection.Good luck trying for Baby #2!
March 24, 2006 at 10:16 am #4561AnonymousInactivehmmm… me too! I had kidney stones and took a nasty fall and broke my tailbone around 6 1/2 mark. I always wondered if the medicine and extra procedures had anything to do with it. Also, I couldn’t take the vitamins because of the kidney stones, even folic acid supplements bothered me. Maybe I did’nt get enough folic acid. I know that seems to be a biggy now when you get pregnant. Good luck with #2, I am too scared to have any more at this point!
March 24, 2006 at 11:57 am #4567AnonymousInactiveOK, time to get on my crazy theory soapbox…
I really think that the antibiotics that I was on for Group B strep during labor caused Robbie’s GERD. I think that the antibiotics kill all the good flora (which we know, so we give kids probiotics and yogurt when they take meds. for infections, right?) in the gut, which is underdeveloped anyway, so the poor children can’t make the bacteria they need to properly digest food. Once we started on goat’s milk for Robbie, he stopped needing meds. I think the good “stuff” in the milk helped his tummy FINALLY develop its own digestive “juices” that were balanced enough so that he could eat comfortably.I honestly believe this, and I would love to see a study done on it. I think it would save a lot of heartache if children were given probiotics after birth to help them digest food.

March 24, 2006 at 12:07 pm #4570AnonymousInactivehow old do they have to be for goats milk? Is it regular goats milk or the formula? I am all for trying it. I grew up on a farm and drank only goats milk form 3-11 years, as we raised our own goats. I was never sick as a kid. after we moved and stated drinking cows milk, I started getting sinus problems, alergies and all sorts of other stuff. I never had a single antibiotic untill I was 12 years old.
March 24, 2006 at 1:18 pm #4577AnonymousInactivewe just did it at 4.5 months and never looked back. our ped wasn’t totally thrilled, but he said he supported our decision as parents. we just get meyenberg evaporated milk and mix it. the lactose is so much lower in goat’s milk that many people with allergies to cow milk can drink it fine.
March 24, 2006 at 3:12 pm #4587AnonymousInactiveThat is too weird. I took antibiotics for a UTI around 7-8 months. I also had a hard time keeping vitamins down. Every kind I tried made me sick, which is weird b/c that was the only time I was ever sick. Something to think about if I ever have another btrue2006-3-24 15:14:33
March 24, 2006 at 3:46 pm #4596AnonymousInactiveHi everyone, just wanted to add my two cents….
I too wanted my kids close in age (had them 20 months apart)…
As for the antibiotics, i also took them during pregnancy (cefzil and flaggyl). But, I took antibiotics also during my first pregnancy, and my first child did not have reflux. I also know tons of people who took antibiotics during their pregnancies that did not have refluxers. I really think it’s just one of those things.
March 24, 2006 at 6:19 pm #4599hellbenntKeymasterhi there,
laura checking in here.
no antibiotics AT ALL during my pregnancy. Jonah was born and had such severe GERD that he wound up in the NICU…
he was not mspi. not sure if there’s a connection. I do know that some mothers to prevent mspi go on a strict diet during the last part of pregnancy…not sure if it helps at all…
I’m currently preggo w/ baby #2 and I just pray for a non-refluxer (GERDling as I like to affectionately refer to these babies, as a term of endearment,- but that’s MY personal choice for my OWN gerdlings) and well, if he has reflux, at least I’ll know how to handle it- what meds and at what doses to ask for (er, demand!)….

March 25, 2006 at 1:29 pm #4621AnonymousInactiveLet me just say that I don’t think EVERY kid with reflux got it from antibiotics. Some might have a physical issue, etc. I just believe it is a little too coincidental that so many of us had antibiotics and our kids have/had reflux. I just think the medical community should look into it, and we should as parents monitor our own medicines to help our kids.
March 25, 2006 at 5:42 pm #4628AnonymousInactiveok, my first son also got antibiotics for strep b..and he has no reflux..never has..and Aidan did not get any kind of antibiotics nor did I take any while I was pregnant and he has reflux…
March 25, 2006 at 11:16 pm #4638AnonymousInactiveso silly posting here again, but i have always been pondering what caused it (even though i am pretty sure it is herditary from my side of the family, and 85% of premature babies get it). Well, this last pregnancy, my allergies were horrible and i started getting hives and a swollen tongue from new food allergies. So… i had to take clariten. Didn’t want to, but it was the only thing that worked. My OB was alittle worried about me using it because it said to not take it if you are prenant. Hmmm….
March 27, 2006 at 1:37 pm #4739AnonymousInactivei think it is just the luck of the draw…………
March 27, 2006 at 8:43 pm #4771AnonymousInactiveI think it’s most likely heredity, luck of the draw and the result of other issues (like prematurity). That being said, I’m giving serious thought to giving up milk and wheat during my third trimester in an attempt to avoid the same issues that Kaelyn has had. Of course, since food allergies run in my family, I’d probably just be avoiding a wheat and milk allergy, but creating some other sort of allergy.
