InactiveI need help! Logan is on 1.5 ml compounded prilosec per day, and is bf. The prilosec has helped with his obvious discomfort from the reflux. However, he still pukes a ton. What can I do to help that? I burp him often, keep him upright after feedings, he sleeps on his left side. Also, he sleeps wonderfully at night now, but is so crabby ALL day long. He won’t nap unless you’re holding him, and cries all day. I don’t know what to do. The dr had mentioned starting a colic med if the prilosec didn’t help. His thought was maybe he had a little colic too. Someone, please HELP!

Keymastermy educated guess is that he needs a LOT more prilosec!!
he most likely will benefit from a higher dose split up over the course of the day so that he can be more comfortable during the day…
has he gained weight since the initial dose was prescribed? if so, fax your doctor, thank him
, describe reflux symptoms (arching, pain, etc), state weight gain and request an increase of dose. fax along dosing recommendations from http://www.marci-kids.comin the meantime, do you have any zantac/pepsid/axid around? I’d give that to help, spacing it at least 2hrs (up to 5) apart from the prilosec & I’d give mylanta cherry supreme, too – this can be given near the zantac, not the prilosec…

InactiveIs it being compounded correctly? Also, the dose seems low. They told me my daughter had colic too, turns out she was really in pain from not being on the right dose. Things got better when we got her in a sling/wedge combo at night too. Also, the hotslings are so cute from ebay. We love ours, planning on meeting some other babywearers in my area that have been through this before too. Do you have any zantac around that you can use in the mean time? That is what saved us, of course.. after i found out from this board to space it 2-4 hours apart from the ppi. (I was doing it wrong for months!)

Keymasterfrom ‘Prevacid 101’ https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&a mp;a mp;PN=0&TPN=1
When I first started here on this reflux journey, I discovered a ‘miracle’ to help get PPIs into my baby. It was called Caracream (there was also Chocobase), and unfortunately
you can’t get it anymore. The very same people developed a product w/ the generic of prilosec, called zegerid (this is now manufactured and sold by another company), & I would DEFINITELY check it out if prilosec is an option for your baby. To find out how you MIGHT be able to get caracream (or chocobase), click here: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5244 & look for the post just after my purple one
! there’s compounded prevacid. this is when the pharmacy makes the liquid for you. If you go this route, the best thing to do is to get it compounded with soduim bicarbonate and have it UNFLAVORED– you get the flavoring ‘on the side’ and add it yourself per dose, at home. If you decide to have the pharmacy flavor it, it really will NOT be good for more than 2 weeks- you’ll need to ask the doctor to ‘humour’ you and write out the prescription for 2 weeks at a time.

InactiveLaura,
Lest anyone else be confused and think that the University of Missouri is pushing a product that we make, try to keep it clear in your posts that, although Zegerid was first developed here, we do not make it or sell it. That is all done by the drug company Santarus in San Diego.
Thanks,

InactiveLogan doesn’t show his reflux symptoms during his “crabby” time during the day. He just cries, well more whines. Maybe he’s just spoiled. Regardless, I bought a carrier, and we use that quite a bit. However, it is a cheap evenflow snugli, and isn’t very comfortable. What’s a good, comfy carrier that’s actually affordable?

Inactiveyou really can’t do anything about the throwing up. a good, comfortable carrier is an ABC, or mei tei carrier. if you sew, they are REALLY easy to make.

InactiveI don’t think refluxers can be spoiled, they deserve to be cranky after going through all this! I used to hear it from my mother all the time. I think you will notice a difference once he is on the correct dosage. We love the hotslings, bought mine from ebay for around $35, also they have a website, along for the ride carriers. It really is just a peice of fabric. Could make one yourself, but its hard when you don’t have your hands free for a second.
It was really hard getting my dd’s prevacid compounded correctly. I listened to the pharmacist instead of following my gut. I finally talked him into doing like in Laura’s post, and it started working. I threw it out at the 2 week mark. He also was kind enough to keep the original prescription there for me and just prepared it every 2 weeks and only charged me for the compounding. Good luck!

Keymasternah, your 2 month old is NOT spoiled
!!!!probably uncomfortable & needs some med adjustment
& could use some babywearing
.read here to see what carriers are suggested (there are also links so you can meet others near you
)- I’d click on the ‘babywearing condensed’ link first: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1044&a mp;a mp;PN=1April 14, 2006 at 1:50 pm #6135Anonymous
InactiveI don’t know about you but I found myself totally overwhelmed in looking at wraps, slings etc. on-line. I didn’t have much to spend and didn’t want to make a mistake.
I found a web-site http://www.mamatoto.org/ that has video clips of how to tie wraps and thought I’d try it at home before buying something and see if I liked it. I wanted something that distributed the weight over both shoulders because of neck and back problems.
I got a 5+ yard long piece of stretchy fabric out of a bucket in my basement, cut it in half lengthwise and tied it on following the directions on that site. It was way comfortable and did a great job of cuddling up my fussy boy and keeping him upright after eating. The first time I popped him in it he fell to sleep (right on my chest where he loves to be) and napped and I was thrilled.
I ended up eventually cutting the ends to a taper for less bulk but I’m still using that every single day with him. I also found a 6ft long piece of cotton on sale that I’ve been using when it too warm for the stretch fabric. Since it’s thinner I didn’t even have to taper the ends. I just cut it into a 20 inch wide strip and it works great too. Both pieces of fabric made two wraps since you only need half the width and I’ve been glad to have 4 because then I have no problems washing often which is totally necessary with as much as he spits up.
Just wanted to add a simple, cheap thought for you in case it helps!
Have a great day!
Kara
