InactiveMy DS (6 months) was just put on Zantac due to refusal to eat and poor sleeping habits. It’s helped tremendously already.
He has been exclusively breastfed until now. In order to boost my supply, I’d been taking (small amounts) of fenugreek. However, I now realize that this herb might have aggravated his reflux. Has anyone else had this experience? I didn’t put 2 and 2 together and now I feel terrible that I might have contributed to his condition. Needless to say, I no longer take the herb.
I’m now supplementing with formula instead, but don’t many reflux babies have a difficult time with regular formula? Are they usually on soy formula?
Finally, in everyone’s experience do reflux babies usually outgrow the condition towards the end of their first year?
TIA

KeymasterHi & welcome!
I literally have to run!
I don’t know about feugreek affecting reflux
as for formula, if the baby has a problem with milk proteins than it’s likely s/he will have problems with soy
not all reflux babies have problems with these (milk & soy) proteins

InactiveI’ve never noticed a differnece in Aidan’s reflux while I was taking fenugreek. Have you tried Blessed Thistle? This can also help boost supply.

InactiveWe think Aidan is reflux-free (unless he overeats or is sick) and will only be on the prevacid until he is one (I say “think” because it really is hard to tell until they go off of the medication). Also, he’s on lacto free formula b/c I didn’t want to do soy and it said it was just as easy to digest. A lot of the little ones on here are on a much more specialty formula. I also give him mylanta at night, and will probably continue doing that after he’s off the meds whenever he seems uncomfortable!

InactiveI don’t know if Fenugreek could aggravate his reflux….it seems reflux babies are ultra sensitive, so it’s possible. I guess the only way to be sure is to see if he improves after some time without it.
Keep in mind that it’s possible the he has outgrown his Zantac dose. Zantac is a very weight sensitive drug and babies quickly outgrow their dose. Sometimes they even plateau on it and no longer get relief from it, and have to move on to a PPI medication like Prevacid or Zegerid. So, if he doesn’t seem better now that you’ve stopped the Fenugreek, I’d suggest looking into the meds.
As for formulas, yes many reflux babies are also MSPI, but not all are. It’s really just trial and error with every baby.
Good luck and glad you found us. I hope your little guy is feeling better soon.
